No. 16 St. Lawrence Edges RPI

CANTON, N.Y. - Carson Gicewicz scored with three minutes left in regulation to give the 16th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's hockey team a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday night at Appleton Arena. With the win, the Saints improve to 14-7-6 (10-2-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-22-1 (2-12-0 ECAC Hockey).

A shot from the right point by Eric Sweetman caromed to Gicewicz, who buried the rebound on the doorstep for his eighth goal of the season, snapping a 1-1 tie. Ryan Lough picked up the assist on the tally, which came at 17:04 of the third period.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Saints were the first to get on the board, as Alex Gilmour netted his fourth of the season. The lone assist was credited to Ben Finkelstein.

RPI drew even at 8:43 of the second, when senior captain Riley Bourbonnais scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year from freshman Will Reilly.

Despite out-shooting St. Lawrence, 35-33, the Engineers were unable to take lead early in the third, despite carrying play for much of the period. RPI doubled-up on the Saints in the frame, 16-8, in the shots department.

Junior Kyle Hayton finished with 34 saves, while Chase Perry had 31. St. Lawrence was 0 for 2 on the power play and did not take a penalty of their own.

RPI is back on the ice tomorrow night, when it visits Clarkson (7pm). St. Lawrence welcomes No. 5 Union to town tomorrow (7pm).
