It also marked the first time that Quinnipiac scored four times in the first period since Jan. 9, 2016 against Harvard at Madison Square Garden.

RPI jumped on the board first when Will Reilly took a cross-ice pass from Riley Bourbonnais on a breakaway and scored from the slot to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. Mike Prapavessis also assisted on the play.

Quinnipiac responded three minutes later when Cukste chased down a loose puck in the neutral zone and handed it to Connor Clifton just above the Bobcats' blue line. Clifton skated up-ice before rifling a pass to the opposite side of the ice to MacMaster along the boards. MacMaster handed the puck back to Cukste as he entered RPI's defensive zone who wristed a shot through traffic that beat RPI goalie Chase Perry to tie the game at 1-1.

Landon Smith scored his first goal of the night just under two minutes later. Derek Smith won the puck in the neutral zone in front of the Bobcats bench before centering a pass to MacMaster. MacMaster then slapped the puck over to Landon Smith on the opposite flank who walked in on goal and blasted a shot over Perry's right shoulder, to the opposite post, to give Quinnipiac a 2-1lead.

With just under five minutes to go in the period, Derek Smith won the puck just below the blue line in the Engineers' defensive zone and tipped it to Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut) in the slot. Duane then gave the puck to Jermain who flipped a shot on goal that found its way under Perry's arm to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.

Landon Smith made it 3-1 with a breakaway for his second of the night. Schutt won the puck on a face-off in front of the Quinnipiac goal before Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) collected it behind the Bobcats goal and sent it up-ice to Smith.

In the second, Quinnipiac was whistled for a hit to give RPI a power play midway through the period. Prapavessis fed Reilly who handed the puck to Jacob Hayhurst at the blue line. Hayhurst's shot from between the face-off circles found daylight and snuck past Shortridge to cut Quinnipiac's lead to two goals, 4-2.

In the closing minutes of the period, a slap shot from the point by Connor Clifton was tipped by Pieper past Perry to push the Bobcats' lead back to three goals, 5-2, heading into the second intermission. Moments later, Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) took a pass from Schutt and gave it Priskie walked across the blue line, to the opposite face-off circle and wristed on past a screened-out Perry to give Quinnipiac a 6-2 lead. RPI's Alex Rodriguez added a goal for the Engineers with just under 10 minutes to go. McKernan then added an empty-netter from the length of the ice to give Quinnipiac a four-goal victory.
