PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Troy Josephs and Nico Sturm scored two goals apiece to lead Clarkson past the Brown men's hockey team, 7-2, in Saturday night's ECAC Hockey contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Clarkson improves to 11-9-3 overall and 6-4-1 in the ECAC, while Brown drops to 3-13-1, 2-8-0 in the conference.
Juniors Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) and Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) both scored third-period goals for the Bears. Lafferty also added an assist and Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) registered a pair of helpers. Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) took the loss, allowing four goals with 11 saves, before Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) allowed three goals and recorded 14 stops.
After over 13 minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Clarkson scored a pair of goals to close out the period, starting at 13:45 when Josephs blasted a shot over the shoulder of Nieto to put the visitors on the board. Nic Pierog added a second goal at 17:06 as he chased down a rebound following a shot from A.J. Fossen and pushed the puck past the line for the two-goal advantage.
Sheldon Rempal and Sturm notched back-to-back goals in the first five minutes of the second period to stretch the lead to 4-0. After Ernst came in for Nieto, Sturm tacked on his second straight tally at 14:43, jamming the puck past the goal line for the five-goal advantage heading into third period.
After Sam Vigneault scored during 4-on-4 play at 7:14 in the third, Bird put the Bears on the board just 29 seconds later, finishing a feed from Corcoran for his fourth goal of the season.
Josephs scored on the power play for his second tally of the game at 14:12, before Lafferty added Brown's second goal at 16:25, using a backhanded shot to beat Kielly in front for his sixth goal of the season.
Clarkson outshot Brown, 32-30.
Brown will hit the road next weekend at Harvard (1/20) and Dartmouth (1/21).
