No. 7 Quinnipiac Falls To Princeton

PRINCETON, New Jersey –  Nationally-ranked No. 7/8 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to Princeton, 5-3, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in Princeton, New Jersey. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 10-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in ECAC Hockey while Princeton improves to 4-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in league play.

Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut), Landon Smith(Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Thomas Aldworth(Keller, Texas) all scored for the Bobcats, while Smith also picked up an assist. Kevin McKernan (Millburgy, Massachusetts) assisted on Quinnipiac's first two goals.

Princeton's Ryan Kuffner put the Tigers in the lead with his sixth goal of the season off a rebound on a shot by Alex Riche. Kuffner's goal was the first by Princeton against Quinnipiac at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink since Nov. 1, 2011 – a run of 251 minutes and 26 seconds over a span of six games that included four-straight shutouts by the Bobcats.

Duane extended his scoring streak to three games with his second goal in as many games. With Quinnipiac on the power play, McKernan zipped a pass across the blue line to Landon Smith along the boards. Smith then delivered a pass to Duane on the goal line who wristed the puck past Princeton's Colton Phinney to knot the game at 1-1.

Coming out of the first intermission, Jackson Cressey cleaned up a rebound in front of the Bobcats' goal on the power play to give Princeton a 2-1 lead. David Hallisey bombed a puck on goal from the point that Quinnipiac goalie Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) played off his pads. The rebound popped out to Cressey's tape in front of an open net.

The Bobcats were quick to respond with Smith scoring his first goal since his hat trick against Dartmouth on Nov. 11 with McKernan setting up his second goal of the night. Smith picked off a Princeton pass in the Bobcats' defensive zone and handed it to McKernan. McKernan maneuvered through the neutral zone, walked a defender above the face-off circle, and gave it back to Smith who ripped a shot past Phinney to tie the game at 2-2.

With less than three minutes left in the second period, Riche got on the board with his fourth of the season to give Princeton a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Two minutes into the third period, Quinnipiac erased its third deficit of the night when Aldworth scored his third of the season. Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota) made a play to keep the puck in Princeton's zone before Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) handed the puck to Aldworth. Aldworth skated in on the Princeton goal and fired a back-hand shot that was stopped. He got his own rebound behind the goal and attempted to center a pass in front of the Tigers' goal, but the puck deflected in past Phinney to tie the game at 3-3. Princeton's Matt Nelson gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with 4:05 to play.  Princeton added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds.

Quinnipiac and Princeton will complete their two-game set on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats will host its annual "Skate With The Bobcats" following the game to benefit "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer".
