ALBANY, N.Y. -- ECAC Hockey today announced that Sam Anas, Quinnipiac and Gavin Bayreuther, St. Lawrence have been named the 2013-14 Men’s Co-Rookie of the Year Award winners as selected by the league’s coaches.
Anas had a productive year in league play for the Bobcats totaling nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points. He was named the HCA National Rookie of the Month and ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month in November. He was the only first-year player in ECAC Hockey to earn three Rookie of the Week (10/29, 11/5 and 11/26) awards. Anas is one of three players in ECAC Hockey, and 23 in the nation, with 40 or more points for the year. He currently leads all freshmen in the nation in goals (19) and points (40). Anas registered a point in 16 of the 22 league contests and recorded the most points on the road (16) among all ECAC Hockey freshmen, leading all ECAC Hockey freshmen with six game-winning goals.
Anas becomes the third Quinnipiac player since 2005-06 when the Bobcats joined ECAC Hockey to win the award.
A solid two-way player, Bayreuther is tied for first nationally in defenseman scoring with 36 points and ranks second among all of Division I blueliners nationally in points per game (0.99). He was tied for third in league scoring (26 points) and led all top defenseman in scoring in conference action (1.18ppg). His 21 assists ranked second in the league. The Canaan, New Hampshire native scored at least one point in every weekend series throughout the season. He scored in 16 of 22 league games on the year. He led all rookies in the nation overall with 22 power-play points.
Bayreuther is the second freshman in Saints hockey history to earn all league honors in his rookie season by being named to the second team.
