Engineers Edged at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior captain Drew LeBlanc scored the eventual game-winning goal and assisted on another to lead the 16th-ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team to a, 2-1, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening at the National Hockey & Event Center. With the win, the Huskies improve to 12-8-0, while the Engineers drop to 5-7-4.

LeBlanc corralled a puck in the slot and flipped it over the shoulder of RPI sophomore netminder Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) for the eventual game-winner at 19:37 of the second stanza. Assists went to freshmen Jonny Brodzinski (Ham Lake, MN) and Kale Kossila (Kaunianen, Finland).

Rensselaer was then unable to find the equalizing goal in the third period, in which each team turned in four shots on goal.

Junior Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) got the visitors on the board first, scoring his second of the season, at 2:43 of the opening period. After cycling the puck down low to senior Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes), Tinordi cut to the net where O'Grady found him all alone with St. Cloud State sophomore goaltender Ryan Faragher (Fort Frances, ON). Tinordi then fired the puck home, high stick-side.

St. Cloud senior captain Ben Hanowski (Little Falls, MN) tied the game (1-1) at 12:54 of the second period, redirecting a shot by LeBlanc. Junior Nic Dowd (Huntsville, AB) picked up the second helper on the power-play tally, which was Hanowski's sixth of the season.

Faragher (11-8) stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced to earn the win, while Diebold (2-3-1) finished with 23 saves.

Rensselaer returns to the ice on Monday, when it hosts Sacred Heart for a New Year's Eve contest at the Houston Field House (4pm). St. Cloud hosts Northern Michigan for a two-game series next Friday (8:37pm) and Saturday (8:07pm).
