Colgate Powers Past RIT

HAMILTON – The Colgate men's hockey team had its best night on the power play with three goals with the extra skater as the Raiders skated away with a 6-3 win over RIT on Friday night at Starr Rink.

Colgate (3-3-0) got multiple point nights from six different skaters, led by Tyson and Tylor Spink as each had two-point nights with a goal and an assist. Fellow rookie Mike Borkowski added two helpers. Eric Mihalik earned his second-straight win with 29 saves between the pipes.

The Tigers (1-4-0) were led by Jeff Smith, Greg Noyes and Matt Garbowski as all three had goals for RIT. Josh Watson got the start in net and made 24 saves in the loss.

The Tigers outshot the Raiders 32-30 in the game. Colgate was 3-for-8 on the power play and RIT scored once on three chances.

The first period did not start out well for the Raiders as RIT jumped on Colgate in the opening three minutes with a pair of goals to go up 2-0. Smith gave the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead 1:11 into the contest. He tipped puck the in at the doorstep off a shot from Josh Mitchell. Noyes then gave the visitors a 2-0 lead a minute later with a wrister from just above faceoff circle that beat Mihalik glove side.

Tylor Spink and Tyson Spink answered for the Raiders later in the period with a pair of scores to tie the game at 2-2 going into the first intermission. Spiro Goulakos fired a shot from the point that the netminder stopped, but Baun got a chance the rebound and missed. Fortunately for the Raiders Tylor Spink was right there to jam it home to get Colgate on the board 12:15 left in the period. Tyson Spink struck with 1:22 remaining in the frame as he fought for another loose puck in front. Tylor Spink and Borkowski were given assists on the play.

The Raiders added to their lead with two goals coming less than a minute part in the second period. Kurtis Bartliff scored his third of the season to give Colgate its first lead at 3-2 with 13:36 left in the frame. Bartliff got a pass from Robbie Bourdon in front of the net and senior lifted a backhand into the top of the net. It took the Raiders 31 seconds to increase the advatage to 4-2 with Goulakos blasting one from the point on the power play. The sophomore and Borkowski passed the puck between them and Goulakos fired a shot low stick side on Watson that hit the net.

Colgate kept the pressure on during another power play and Darcy Murphy scored his third of the year on a great tic-tac-toe play with Thomas Larkin and Bourdon. Murphy was the recipient of a nice pass from Larkin in front of the crease and he tucked the puck between the pads of Watson to make it 5-3 with 6:06 remaining in the second.

RIT stopped Colgate's run of five unanswered goals with Garbowsky somehow stuffing the puck over the line during scrum in the blue paint. Adam Hartley and Chris Saracino were given assists on the goal.

In the third period, John Lidgett had the lone goal of the frame coming with 5:38 remaining. Joe Wilson skated down the right side and spotted Lidgett on the opposite side. The two connected on a pass and Lidgett put it past Watson to make it 6-3. Jeremy Price was given an assist on the play to close out the scoring.

The Tigers outshot the Raiders 32-30 in the game. Colgate was 3-for-8 on the power play and RIT scored once on three chances.

The Raiders hopped on a bus following the game and will be playing at the Cape Cod Classic tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against 20th-ranked Quinnipiac.
