Schwartz Did Amazing Things While Battling Cancer

My only conversation with Mandi Schwartz concluded with this wish: "I look forward to writing the happy ending.''
"It's a deal,'' she told me over the telephone from Wilcox in February of 2009, shortly before a fundraiser was held in her honour.
At various points over the next two years, it seemed like the happy ending would become a reality. Her cancer -acute myeloid leukemia, which attacks the blood and bone marrow -was in remission from May of 2009 to April of last year, only to recur. But she kept fighting, and hoping.
