Mourning the Loss of Mandi
Mandi Schwartz, a painfully shy young Yale student-athlete, who
rallied a community and left a legacy of cheerfulness and caring
that will live on for generations, passed away Sunday following a
long battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
Schwartz, 23, who played women’s ice hockey at Yale, battled
cancer for nearly two and a half years. She had been receiving
treatment in her hometown of Wilcox in Saskatchewan.
“She was a wonderful person who touched our lives and
influenced the Yale community in such a gracious and gentle
way,” said Yale athletic director Tom Beckett of the young
women who worked for two years in the Yale athletic office.
“She was such a giving young lady and caring of others. She
never wanted to talk about herself. You don’t run into people
like this very often.
