Emily DesMeules, a former North Pomfret resident and Woodstock High student who plays hockey at Yale, suffered a fractured fibula during the first game of this season. The junior defender certainly isn't pleased to be sidelined, but neither she nor any of her teammates are likely to allow themselves to wallow in self-pity over injuries -- or many other setbacks.
That's because DesMeules and the Bulldogs (1-12) have other more important issues to concern themselves with -- such as raising funds and awareness for their program's second annual “White Out For Mandi” game, which takes place Friday against visiting Princeton. Proceeds benefit the Mandi Schwartz Foundation, a charity started by Yale captain Aleca Hughes in memory of her former Bulldogs teammate, who died of cancer in April at age 23.
The foundation helps youth hockey players with life-threatening illnesses. The event will also help raise awareness of the need for bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors. Schwartz had a stem cell transplant utilizing blood from an umbilical cord blood donation and Yale sponsors a bone marrow donor registration drive each spring.
