The search to find bone marrow and umbilical cord donors for
Yale center Mandi Schwartz – who needs a stem cell transplant
in the next 30 to 60 days in her battle against leukemia –
has taken on astronomical dimensions, mostly through Internet.
The success of that transplant depends entirely on finding
Schwartz a match through a campaign “Become Mandi’s
Hero” designed to educate people throughout the world about
the urgent need for umbilical cord blood donors.
The effort to save Mandi was launched months ago using Web-based
and social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter.
“A lot of the effort is being done through Facebook now;
it’s a huge thing,” said Bulldogs goalkeeper Jackee
Snikeris, of Downingtown. “Everyone is getting the word
out.”
