It's been a long, slow recovery from a stem cell transplant for hockey player Mandi Schwartz, who had hoped to be home in Wilcox, Sask., for Christmas.

The 22-year-old Yale forward underwent a transplant Sept. 22 in Seattle to treat leukemia. Schwartz has remained there since with parents Rick and Carol for follow-up care. A small setback last week has delayed her return to Canada until January.

“I was really sad that I wasn't going to be able to be home for Christmas, but I'll be here for another week or two after probably, so it's not that much longer to wait to go home I guess,” Mandi said Thursday from Seattle.
