Unless you’re a Boston Bruins fan or a hockey nut in general, Lord Stanley’s sport is probably the furthest thing from your mind this time of the year. However, a local young lady has made hockey headlines that are more than worthy of note.

Caroline Murphy of Woodstock and the Pomfret School, has been elected to the prestigious position of captain of the Yale women’s ice hockey team for the 2009-2010 season. She is the eighth Yale’s women’s ice hockey captain from Connecticut and the first since the 1996-1997 season to lead the Bulldogs.

Murphy, a junior, will lead the Bulldogs into their 33rd varsity season. She was selected as captain by a team vote in March. This past season, Murphy, a winger, played in 28 games, scoring a pair of goals and adding five assists. During her first three seasons at Yale, she and her teammates have posted 37 wins. She will be formally introduced as captain at the team banquet this month.
