Team Notes: Boston Theme for Yale's Final Non-Conference Games
The following article appeared January 1 on the Yale Web site.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale's last two non-conference games have
the Bulldogs matched up against a pair of Boston-area teams,
Northeastern and No. 7 Boston College. The Bulldogs visit the
Huskies Friday night (7:00 p.m., Pay-per-view Video on GoNU.com)
and then return home to host the Eagles Saturday night (7:00 p.m.,
Free Video on Yale All*Access, WYBC 1340 AM, GameTracker).
Yale-Northeastern
Back when Yale head coach Hilary Witt (a 2001 Northeastern
graduate) was playing for the Huskies, NU had a decided edge in the
series with Yale. But the Bulldogs have won the last three,
including last season's 1-0 OT win in which sophomore goalkeeper
Jackee Snikeris (Downingtown, Pa.) made 16 saves for the shutout.
Senior forward Maggie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn.) scored the
game-winner with six seconds left in overtime, helping Yale
overcome a 47-save effort by Leah Sulyma. Sulyma is still around,
posting a .929 save percentage and a 1.98 goals-against average.
She has been splitting time with freshman Florence Schelling, the
Swiss National Team goalie who played in the 2006 Olympics.
Schelling is third in the country in save percentage (.950) and
fifth in goals-against average (1.55).
Yale-Boston College
A goal by senior forward Crysti Howser (Wilmette, Ill.) tied the
game at two at 11:48 of the second period last year at Ingalls
Rink, and that was how the Yale-BC game ended up. It was the fourth
time in the last seven meetings between these two teams that the
game went to overtime. Overall Yale is 2-3-2 in that span, with a
1-1-2 record in overtime. BC goalie Molly Schaus, a gold medal
winner with Team USA at the 2008 IIHF Women's World Championship,
is fifth in the country in save percentage (.939) and eighth in
goals-against average (1.66).
