The year was 1998 and it was the first time women played ice hockey in the Olympics. It was greatly anticipated that the women's gold medal game would have Canada facing off against the United States. Canada was favored to win the gold since it had won all the national and international competition in previous years, and the U.S. was perpetually finishing second, while no other national team could match their level of play.

The victory by the Americans was a major event for women's sports and it was witnessed by millions in the United States and around the world.
