Union Spends Break Giving Back
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - While most Union
students were home enjoying downtime after Thanksgiving, the
women's ice hockey team were back to work on the ice by
November 27. The Dutchwomen also immediately began giving back to
the local Schenectady community by participating in several
charitable events.
"Our team has been involved in a few community service events over
winter break", says head coach Claudia Barcomb. "They were all very
rewarding and well received by both our players and the kids
participating."
On November 30th the Dutchwomen, along with the men's ice hockey
team, played sled hockey for a Stride event with members of the
Warrior sled hockey team. Barcomb explains, "Our teams
certainly enjoyed it and found it extremely challenging to
participate in. But they loved it." The Warriors defeated team
Union in the game, which was preceded by a practice amongst the
teams.
The Dutchwomen again paired up with the Schenectady Youth Hockey
Association for SYHA Day at Union on December 4th. Members of SYHA
came to Messa Rink to take the ice with the squad. The girls helped
the young players skate throughout the event, and then met up with
the families afterwards for a pasta dinner.
Adopt A Family has become a team favorite, and the
Dutchwomen were again able to raise around $1,000 dollars
to donate. The squad purchased and wrapped gifts for four
disadvantaged children from Schenectady, and delivered them
anonymously to give two families a very happy Christmas.
As the the holidays concluded, Union set their eyes back on the
ice to prepare for their opening contests of 2012. The Dutchwomen
return to Messa Rink tomorrow, January 6th, to take on Cornell
University at 3:00 p.m. for an ECAC match up. On Saturday, January
7th, the squad will battle Colgate University on home ice at
3:00 p.m. for another conference game.
