Union Busy with Community Service Efforts

The Union women's ice hockey team has been busy this spring in their continuing efforts to help out in the community. This past week the team has helped with the construction of a house over multiple days with Habitat for Humanity, set up for CATWALK for a Cause, and planned and hosted a dance for STRIDE. They also this spring have helped out with the Minerva Games and participated in Relay for Life.

“As a team we've really enjoyed giving back to community this spring with all the amazing events going on around campus. It's a great opportunity to spend time with teammates while also making a difference in the lives of others. The off season fortunately allows many of us to give up our free time and get involved in events that benefit the local community and beyond,” said junior Molly Kate Devin.

The STRIDE dance was an event to help mentally disabled children have a prom night. Over the past month the leadership committee of juniors Dania Simmonds, Kate Gallagher, Lauren Cromartie, and freshman Elsa Bruestle planned and organized a dance for the kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend such an event. The whole team came together the night of the dance to decorate, host games, and dance with all in attendance.

"It was amazing to see the expressions on the faces of the kids at the dance and how much they enjoyed dancing with our hockey team.  It really made my night to see their smiles, and that enough will bring me back to host the dance again,” said Dania Simmonds.

“As a team we were truly honored to be able to host this dance for these children. Being able to provide a prom for children who are not as fortunate to attend one was very gratifying. The smiles and thanks we received from the kids and parents made every minute worth while and I hope we can do it again next year!” said junior Chelsey Heinhuis
