Dutchwomen Trio Earns National Academic Honors
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union College women's ice hockey players Courtney Chais (Plantation, Fla.), Stephanie Gilbert (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Kristin Hissong (Littleton, Colo.) have earned AWHCA (American Women's Hockey Coaches Association) National Academic Scholar honors for the 2007-08 season.
A senior defender, Chais led the Dutchwomen in goals and played in 31 games. She netted the game-winner against Sacred Heart on January 19. A dual major in math and economics, Chais is a two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic team honoree.
A junior forward, Gilbert appeared in 31 games with two goals and two assists, and recorded only three penalties all season. A biology major, Gilbert is a two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic team member. She was named the team's most improved player and earned the Hana Yamashita Commitment Award. Gilbert, along with Lundy Day (Calgary, Alb.) will serve as a captain for the 2008-09 season.
A senior defender, Hissong played in all 32 games, recording an assist at Sacred Heart on November 27. A history major, Hissong is a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic team honoree.
To earn AWHCA National Academic Scholar honors, student athletes must have been in attendance at present institution for one year, have a 3.5 or better GPA over two semesters or three quarters, have dressed for 75% of the team's games and be a member in good standing with their team and school.
