SCHENECTADY — Ever since the Union College women’s
hockey program was elevated to Division I in 2003-04, it has
struggled to achieve success.
But there was a different feeling about last season’s
Dutchwomen. They were more competitive, nearly won their first ECAC
Hockey game since 2003-04 and they didn’t give up 10 or more
goals in an ECACH game for the first time, and only once overall,
the fewest in a season.
Now, second-year coach Claudia Asano has the team ready to take the next step to respectability, and finally put an end to its 86-game ECACH winless streak (0-84-2). The Dutchwomen, who are 1-99-2 in ECACH play and 19-128-5 overall in five years at Division I, open the season tonight against Boston University at Messa Rink at 7.
