The 1000 Islands Privateers of the Federal Hockey League (FHL) announced that team owner/president Nicole Kirnan, a former St. Lawrence standout, shall assume the role of head coach beginning with the Privateers’ contest Friday and serve in the role for the duration of the season.
Kirnan’s presence behind the bench will mark the first time at any level of professional men’s hockey that a female shall serve as head coach. She is assuming the role previously held by Paul Kelly, who is returning to the lineup to resume his career as a player with the Privateers.
In addition to her playing career at St. Lawrence, Kirnan competed at several USA Hockey Olympic festivals and played on the USA Junior National team in 1996.
Kirnan began her coaching career at Manhattanville, serving as head coach from 2002-06. During her tenure, she led the team NCAA tournament appearances in each season. Kirnan also coached at the USA National Development Camps and Olympic festivals on multiple occasions.
