MacDougall Added to Saints Staff
CANTON, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence Athletic Director Margie Strait has announced the hiring of Mare MacDougall to the position of assistant coach for the women's hockey program. MacDougall, who played defense at Mercyhurst from 2001-03, joins the Saints staff after working as an assistant coach at Wayne State for four seasons.
"We are both excited and fortunate to add someone with the wealth of knowledge and coaching ability that Mare possesses," said Saints Head Coach Paul Flanagan. "I believe she'll do an outstanding job and I'm looking forward to her joining the staff."
MacDougall helped the Lakers capture back-to-back league championships in her two seasons at Mercyhurst, and earned CHA All-Academic honors her senior year. She graduated Cum Laude from Mercyhurst in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. MacDougall was very involved in the Erie community, as she worked as a volunteer at an after-school program for at-risk children.
The Lumsden, Saskatchewan native participated in the Olympic Oval High Performance Program in Calgary before joining the Lakers in 2001. While at the Oval, MacDougall had the opportunity to play and train along side some of the best female hockey players in Canada, and was a member of the 2001 National Championship Oval X-Treme Team. She also attended the University of Calgary, where she was the recipient of the Jimmie Condon Scholarship for academic and athletic excellence. MacDougall, setting a trend which she continued through her time at Wayne State, was involved in the community as a volunteer art education program instructor at the Glenbow Museum.
As an assistant at Wayne State, MacDougall served the team in a variety of ways. Her responsibilities included game and practice preparation, travel planning and recruiting. She also worked very closely with the Warriors' defensive unit.
The Saints will scrimmage McGill on September 26th before opening the 2007-08 regular season at home against Hockey East powerhouse New Hampshire on October 5th and 6th in Appleton Arena.
