TROY -- The longest women's college hockey game in history started
at 2 p.m. last Saturday. It ended five and a half hours later.
"They had windows at Quinnipiac," RPI women's hockey coach John
Burke said Wednesday afternoon. "I looked out early in the game and
it was light out. Sometime during the game, I don't know when, I
looked out and it was pitch black. I was like, 'What time is it?'
"
RPI survived the hockey day and night, beating Quinnipiac 2-1 in
the fifth 20-minute overtime. Summing it all up, the two teams
played 144 minutes and 32 seconds in the third and deciding game of
their ECAC playoff series. Officially, the longest game in the
sport's history came on March 10, 1996 when New Hampshire beat
Providence 3-2 in a game that took 145 minutes and 35 seconds.
