Rick Seeley was named Quinnipiac’s new coach on April 8, 2008, taking over a program coming off a five-win season. It wasn’t long after that date that the quests to bring Kelly Babstock and Erica Uden Johansson to the Hamden, Conn., campus began in earnest.
Babstock and Uden Johansson aren’t just impact freshmen at Quinnipiac this season. They’re two of the hotter properties in Division 1. As the first semester closed, Babstock was second in the nation in scoring with 17-19-36 totals — behind only Canadian Olympic star Meghan Agosta of Mercyhurst — and Johansson was averaging better than a point a game at 8-11-19.
The Bobcats brought a 13-6-1 mark into the new year, their 6-5-0 record in ECAC Hockey putting them smack in the logjam of teams aiming to finish second behind No. 1 Cornell. Probably not too surprising to casual observers, who figured the Bobcats were on an upward trajectory after going 19-10-8 last season — a giant step forward after winning a total of eight games the previous two years, the second of those Seeley’s debut.
