Bobcats Appoint Flor Captain
HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior assistant captain Kallie Flor
(Farmington, Minn.) was named captain of the Quinnipiac University
women’s ice hockey team for the 2009-10 season at the
Women’s Ice Hockey Awards Banquet. Fellow junior Evelina
Husar (Eskilstuna, Sweden) was appointed assistant captain for the
second consecutive season. Junior Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario)
was named the team’s Most Valuable Player at the banquet,
while senior Trudy Reyns (Port Hope, Ontario) was awarded the
Defensive Player of the Year, and freshman Chelsea Illchuk
(Lockhart, Manitoba) took home the Rookie of the Year accolade.
Team trainer Jennifer Skelley was also recognized, earning the
Coaches Award.
Duffy earned the MVP honors as she ranked second on the team in
points (18), goals (9) and tied to lead the team in assists (9).
The forward appeared in all 33 games and recorded her career highs
in assists and points in a three-point performance at Rensselaer on
Jan. 10.
“Any success our team saw this year was due in large part to
the play of Janine Duffy,” said Head Coach Rick Seeley.
Reyns was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year, and
also served as the team’s captain for the second consecutive
season. The senior finished her career playing in 136 games, just
two games short of the program record held by Vicky Graham. She
tallied four goals and ten assists in her final season, ranking her
fifth all-time in career points (51).
“Trudy works hard year in and year out,” said Seeley.
“She was a vocal leader who produced great efforts for the
team on and off the ice.”
Freshman forward Illchuk earned the Rookie of the Year honors. The
Manitoba native picked up six points on the year, tallying five
goals and one assist.
“Chelsea’s game drastically improved throughout her
freshman season, “said Seeley. “Her ability and
confidence have definitely progressed and we’re excited about
the direction she’s going.”
Flor will wear the “C” on her jersey in the upcoming
season, a unanimous decision by players and coaches. Flor will be
joined by Husar, who will serve as the assistant captain for the
second consecutive season.
“Kallie is a great leader with or without the letter on her
jersey,” said Seeley. “The coaching staff was in total
agreement on her appointment as captain. We also agreed on having
Evelina serve as an assistant captain for her second straight
season, she is a great leader and our players look up to
her.”
The banquet also instituted a Coaches Award that is given to any
individual, on or off the team, who brings a lot to the program and
impacts the team in a positive way. The coaches presented the honor
to Skelley, the team trainer.
“Skelley was an integral member of our program,” said
Seeley. “She really helped alleviate the new coaches’
transition to the Bobcats.”
