Chu, Ruggiero Named Alternate Captains for U.S. Olympic Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Former Harvard All-Americans and
Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winners Angela Ruggiero '02-04 and
Julie Chu '06-07 were selected as alternate captains for the 2010
U.S. Olympic Women's Hockey Team, USA Hockey announced Thursday
afternoon. Ruggiero, making her fourth Olympic team, and Chu, a
three-time Olympian, will be joined by alternate captain Jenny
Potter, while Natalie Darwitz will serve as team captain for Team
USA, which is preparing for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics next
month.
Ruggiero, who has played more games (244) for Team USA than any
other player, has been honored as the world's top defender six
times. In her 244 games with Team USA, Ruggiero has amassed a total
of 198 points on 60 goals and 138 assists, second most in U.S.
history for a defenseman. Ruggiero captured the gold medal with
Team USA in 1998 at Nagano, the silver in 2002 at Salt Lake City
and the bronze in 2006 at Torino. During her career at Harvard, she
was a four-time All-American and the winner of the Patty Kazmaier
Award, presented to the nation’s top Division I women’s
college hockey player, in 2004.
Chu, a forward, earned the silver medal with Team USA at the 2002
Olympics and a bronze at the 2006 games, has scored 55 goals and
handed out 195 assists in 185 games with the U.S. National Team.
Chu, who is the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 284
points on 196 assists and 88 goals, was the recipient of the Patty
Kazmaier trophy in 2007. She was also a three-time All-American as
a skater with the Crimson.
