For sheer, unbridled glee, Angela Ruggiero remembers not her
Olympic gold medal, nor the glass of terrific pinot grigio she had
with her Pad Thai a few weeks ago at that quaint Minneapolis
restaurant. Rather, pure rhapsody arrives when she talks about the
slap shot she took during a pre-Olympic game at the University of
New Hampshire.
"I put it through a panel of glass," she recalled, giggling over
the phone during a conversation last week. "That, to me, was one of
the coolest feelings ever. To shoot and see the puck go through
glass and shatter all over the place. That was great."
Life is about balances, which is why for Ruggiero some innocent
destruction can coexist amusingly within a person who otherwise
specializes in constructive acts: hockey, for example. Ruggiero,
30, and officially a Metro Detroit resident since she was 16,
arrives in Vancouver this week for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
