When Harvard and Northeastern take the ice at the Bright Center
tonight for the championship game of the Women’s Beanpot,
each team will be counting on a goalie who spent most of the first
half of the season in a backup role.
Harvard (15-5-4), ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com poll, lost senior
Christina Kessler in mid-January when she suffered a season-ending
knee injury. Kessler was 64-16-6, first on Harvard’s all-time
goalie wins list, and held the NCAA career record with a .9412 save
percentage when she was hurt.
Into the breach jumped Laura Bellamy, a freshman from Duluth,
Minn., who had played in just three games before taking over the
top job. Bellamy (6-2-1) is now third in the country with a 1.21
goals-against average and the sixth-best save percentage (.939).
