Canadian Sarah Vaillancourt was wide open for a shot, sitting in the slot waiting for a crisp pass to set up a one-timer, but American defenceman Caitlin Cahow wasn't about to let her score.

Cahow sprinted from her spot in front of the net and dove out to block the puck. Vaillancourt didn't hesitate. She rifled a shot and it skipped off Cahow's stick and reflected hard off her helmet -- so hard in fact, that the ear guard on the side of her helmet splintered and a piece of it pierced straight through Cahow's ear. Blood was everywhere.

Cahow needed a few stitches, but she didn't mind. Vaillancourt didn't score, and that's all that mattered to Cahow.
