Q & A with Angela Ruggiero
The following article featuring former Harvard standout Angela Ruggiero appeared December 27 on the Love the Game Web site.
Angela Ruggiero became both the first female defenseman in the
Central Hockey League and the first woman non-goalie to play
professional men's hockey in North America. Three-time Olympic
medalist Ruggiero graciously responded to questions for
Love the Game on her career as a hockey player,
apprentice, and author.
When and how did you get started in hockey? What was it
like becoming the first women non-goalie to play professional men's
hockey [as a Tulsa Oiler with your brother Bill]?
I started hockey in Los Angeles when I was 7. My dad signed up my
younger brother [Bill] (6) and my older sister Pam (8) and we all
played on the same Mite C team in [Thousand] Oaks, CA. It was
amazing to play with my brother...just like when we were kids,
except I was playing with men now! I got an assist in the last
shift and got to skate down to my brother in net and pat him on the
pads.
