Feature: Vaillancourt's Game Began Outdoors

Without question, Harvard's Sarah Vaillancourt has thrived in the bright spotlight that is the Olympic Games as well as the upper-echelon of Division I hockey.

But her fondest memories are of playing on outdoor rinks, especially in her hometown of Sherbrooke, Quebec. That, in turn, brings her back to the rink her father, Robert, built when she was two.

"That's when I started skating - not because I was forced to but because I wanted to," recalled Vaillancourt, who for the second year in row is a Patty Kazmaier Award candidate. "My dad would come home for lunch. He only had an hour and I remember waiting by the door for dad to play hockey with me when I was three, four or five.
