CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Head coach Katey Stone of No. 1-ranked Harvard is among the seven finalists for the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award, the AHCA announced today.
Stone, the third-winningest coach in NCAA Divison I women's college hockey history, guided the Crimson to a 22-0-0 record in conference games this season, as Harvard became the second ECAC women's squad to finish the regular season perfect. Stone, in her 14th year behind the Harvard bench, has accumulated 300 victories in her career, all with the Crimson.
She has helped Harvard to a 32-1-0 overall record this year, leading the Crimson to its fifth NCAA Frozen Four during her tenure. Harvard was a perfect 10-0-0 in Ivy League play, capturing its four Ivy championship under Stone's tutelage. The team also grabbed its fifth ECAC regular-season title, its fifth ECAC tournament championship and its ninth Beanpot victory en route to the Frozen Four.
On Jan. 12, Stone coached the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team to the gold medal at the inaugural 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's U-18 World Championship in Calgary, Alta. Team USA defeated Canada, 5-2, in the finals after downing the Czech Republic, 8-0, in the semifinals. En route to the championship, the U.S. beat Russia, Switzerland and Sweden in the first round.
Stone received the AHCA Coach of the Year honor in 1999 after
leading the Crimson to the AWCHA national title.
