Hanover -- Each week during the academic year, the Valley News profiles a Dartmouth student-athlete. The college draws competitors from numerous states and foreign countries and their backgrounds are often as interesting as their exploits on the playing field or in an arena. Today, we meet 21-year old hockey player Jenna Hobeika, a senior who was born on Valentine's Day in 1990 and who thinks becoming a team doctor for the NHL's New Jersey Devils might be her dream job.
Family: Mother Linda is a speech therapist who works out of the family's home in Alpine, N.J., a Bergen County suburb of New York City. Father Paul is an orthopedic surgeon. Brother Mike, 23, graduated from Boston College and works in accounting for a New Jersey fashion company. Brother Chris, 20, studies computer science and economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Brother Gabe, 17, is a volleyball player at Bergen Catholic High, and brother Luke, 11, plays youth hockey.
Awesome Alpine: Hobeika's hometown is 15 miles northwest of midtown Manhattan and, in 2009, landed atop Forbes magazine's rankings of “America’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes” with a median home price of more than $3 million. The town, all of 6 square miles in size, has fewer than 2,000 residents, and most houses are built on wooded lots of two acres or more. Because of high property values and few school-age children, the tax rate is one of New Jersey's lowest. Current and former residents include rap music industry participants Jay-Z, Sean Combs and Lil’ Kim; singers Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder; pro athletes Patrick Ewing, Johnny Damon and CC Sabathia; and actors Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Wesley Snipes.
