Team Notes: Dartmouth Travels to Quinnipiac and Princeton

HANOVER, N.H. —The Dartmouth women’s hockey team opened 2012 with a home victory over Vermont on Jan. 3, 5-2. The Big Green had five different skaters score a goal and sophomore Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) tallied the team’s first shorthanded goal of the season.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
The Dartmouth women’s hockey team has a 7-5-1 record overall, a 4-3-1 ECAC Hockey mark and are 2-1-0 in the Ivy League. The Big Green have won two straight and four of their last five contests.

The team is in seventh place in the ECAC with nine points in eight games. Out of the six teams ahead of Dartmouth in the league, only Harvard and Cornell have played eight-or-less conference contests. The other four teams have either played 10 or 12 games. Quinnipiac leads the league with 19 points in 12 games, Clarkson is in second with 13 points in 10 games and Cornell and Harvard are tied for third with 12 points.

Through 13 games, Dartmouth has had 16 players record a point, 12 skaters with multiple points and nine players with at least one goal and one assist.  Senior Kelly Foley (South Boston, Mass.) leads the team with 15 points on a team-best 10 goals and five assists. Junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) is second with five goals and a team-best nine assists for 14 points. Senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) is the other Dartmouth skater with at least 10 points. She has three goals and eight assists for 11 points. Junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) leads the Big Green defensemen with four goals and five assists for nine points. Senior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) is fifth on the team with eight points on four goals and five assists, and junior Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) is sixth with three goals and four assists for seven points. Morgan Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) leads all freshmen with five points on five assists.

Sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has played all but three games for Dartmouth. She has 246 saves, a .921 save percentage, a 2.10 goals against average, a 5-4-1 record and two shutouts in 601:13 minutes.

The Big Green are averaging 2.92 goals per game, while allowing 2.46 goals against. The squad takes 27.2 shots per game and commits 3.90 penalties per game. Dartmouth is 9-for-63 on the power play, converting 14.3 percent of the time, and is 43-for-48 on the penalty kill at 89.6 percent.

FROZEN FENWAY
The Big Green will be making a trip to Boston on Jan. 10 to do what few teams have done, play hockey at Fenway Park. Providence will host Dartmouth at 3 p.m. as part of Sun Life’s Frozen Fenway 2012.

The Dartmouth-Providence game will be the only women’s college hockey game played there this season and one of six college contests. Their game on the 10th will be the only contest played that day, and tickets are available by phone at 877-REDSOX9 or online at redsox.com/frozenfenway.

DOWN A SKATER; DOESN’T MATTER
With just under two minutes remaining in the first period against Vermont, the Big Green were on the penalty kill after a tripping call went against Fischer. Even with the Catamounts having the advantage, the Big Green scored when Dumais fired a pass to Winkel who then beat the goaltender low and to the right side of the net. It marked the teams first shorthanded goal of the season.

It was the first shorthanded goal for Dartmouth since Alyssa Boehm ’11 had one in the 7-0 home victory over Princeton on Feb. 5, 2011.

AFTER YOU
For the second consecutive game, the Big Green fell behind 1-0 in the first period but came back to secure the victory. Dartmouth trailed UNH, 1-0, four minutes into the game, but eventually won the contest , 8-5.

Against Vermont, the Catamounts scored eight minutes into the contest, but the Big Green used three goals in the first to propel the team to a 5-2 victory.

For the season, Dartmouth is 4-3-0 when the opposing team scores first and 3-2-1 when it tallies the game’s first goal.

CAREER FIRSTS PART 1
For a pair of Dartmouth freshmen the win against Vermont will always be remembered. Samantha Zeiss (Stamford, Conn.) and Abbie Lund (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each recorded their first collegiate point in the victory on the same goal.

With the team trailing, 1-0, Lund had the puck behind the net on the near side, and then slid a pass across the front of the crease to a streaking Zeiss. She quickly redirected the puck into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal in her 13th career game. It was Lund’s first collegiate assist. 

CAREER FIRST PART 2

Senior Brittany Mills (Winchester, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the victory at UNH. Mills converted a rebound off of a shot from senior Erica Dobos (Bethel Park, Pa.). It marked Mills’ first point in her 47th career game.

ROAD WARRIORS
The Big Green have been almost unbeatable away from Thompson Arena this season. The win at UNH improved Dartmouth to 5-1-1 on the road, including unbeaten in its last six games and a five-game winning streak. The team last loss on the road in the first game of the season at fourth-ranked Boston College on Oct. 23. 

PAYS TO SHOOT MORE
The offense forced the action against Vermont and outshot the Catamounts, 37-18. It marked the fourth time this season the Big Green have outshot opponents. In all four games, Dartmouth has won the contests. When the opponent takes more shots, the Big Green are 3-3-1.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac enters the weekend leading ECAC Hockey with 19 points on a 13-7-1 record overall and a 9-2-1 mark in the conference. The Bobcats haven’t lost since Nov. 19 against Cornell at home and are currently on a seven-game winning streak.

It has been almost a month since the team last played when it had a home-and-home with Princeton on Dec. 9-10. On the ninth at Princeton, Quinnipiac earned a 1-0 victory off a second period goal by senior Melissa Perry. The next night at home, The Bobcats again shutout the Tigers, this time winning, 3-0. Junior Victoria Vigilanti earned the shutouts in both contests.

Sophomore Kelly Babstock leads the team with 24 points on 11 goals and 13 assists. Freshman Nicole Kosta is second with three goals and 13 assists for 16 points. Juniors Breann Frykas and Brittany Lyons are tied for third with 11 points. Frykas has six goals and five assists and Lyons has five goals and six assists.

In net, Vigilanti has played in 19 of the team’s 21 games. She has 377 saves, a .913 save percentage, a 2.03 goals against average, an 11-6-1 record and six shutout in 1,065:06 minutes.

Quinnipiac is averaging 2.38 goals per game, while allowing 2.14 goals against. The Bobcats take 30.1 shots per game and commit 3.40 penalties per game. On the power play, the team is 12-for-87 (13.8 percent) and is 59-for-69 (85.5 percent) on the penalty kill.

SERIES HISTORY
When Dartmouth and Quinnipiac play Friday it will be for only the 13th time. The Big Green lead the all-time series, 7-3-2. The squads first met on January 5, 2005 at Thompson Arena. Dartmouth won the game easily, 5-2. The Bobcats earned a tie in the next game, but didn’t garner a victory in the series until last year on November 14, 2009. The teams split the two games last season with each winning on the road. Dartmouth at Quinnipiac, 4-3, in overtime on Nov. 13, 2010, and the Bobcats earned a 4-0 victory in Hanover on Feb. 4, 2011.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

Princeton holds a 6-9-3 record overall, a 5-6-1 mark in ECAC Hockey and a 4-1-0 record in the Ivy League heading into the weekend. The Tigers are tied for fifth in the conference with 11 points. Princeton played at Ohio State on Dec. 30-31 and earned a tie in both contests.

In the game on Dec. 30, the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead in the second period, but sophomore Gabie Figueroa tied the game seven minutes later. OSU regained a one-goal advantage in the third but sophomore Sally Butler tied the score for good with just under four minutes left in the period. The next night, Ohio State again gained a 1-0 advantage in the first period, but Butler evened the score in the second period in what ended up being the last goal of the game.

Butler leads the team in points with 16 on nine goals and seven assists. Sophomore Denna Laing is second with 14 points on six goals and eight assists. Sophomore Olivia Mucha rounds out the top three with four goals and six assists for 10 points.

In net, senior Rachel Weber has played in every game for the Tigers. She has 501 saves, a .929 save percentage, a 2.10 goals against average, a 6-9-3 record and two shutouts in 1084:19 minutes.

Princeton is averaging 2.00 goals per game, while allowing 2.22 goals against. The Tigers take 28.2 shots per game and commit 5.20 penalties per game. On the power play, the team is 8-for-79 (10.1 percent) and is 75-for-90 (83.3 percent) on the penalty kill.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s contest marks the 73rd time that Dartmouth and Princeton have competed on the ice. The Tigers lead the all-time series, 38-29-5. The teams first met on January 24, 1978 at Thompson Arena. Princeton won handily over the Big Green, 9-2. The Tigers dominated the series early on, winning 20 of the first 22 games. Dartmouth earned its first win in the series on February 10, 1985. Last season, the Big Green swept both games. The team squeaked out a 3-2 victory at Princeton in overtime on Nov. 12, 2010, and then clocked the Tigers at home on Feb. 5, 2011 with a 7-0 win.
