Team Notes: No. 10 Dartmouth Prepped for Princeton and Quinnipiac
HANOVER, N.H. —This past weekend, the team played at Brown and Yale and came away with two victories. Dartmouth won, 3-1, at the Bears on Friday, Jan. 27, and earned a 6-0 victory at the Bulldogs on Saturday.
In the victory at Brown, junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) led the Big Green, scoring the team’s first two goals. Sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 25 saves to hold the Bears to one goal.
The next night against Yale, the Big Green had one of the
most complete performances of the season. The team registered its
third shutout of the season, and tallied its second-highest scoring
total. Nanji led the team with two goals and two assists. Senior Kelly
Foley (South Boston, Mass.) added two goals and an
assist.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
The 10th-ranked Dartmouth women’s hockey team enters the
weekend in a tie for third in ECAC Hockey after winning six of its
last seven games. The Big Green are 14-6-2 overall, 10-4-2 in ECAC
Hockey and are 4-2-1 in the Ivy
League.
Through 22 games, Dartmouth has had 18 players record a point, six skaters with double-digit points, 15 players with multiple points and 11 skaters with at least one goal and one assist. Junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Quebec) leads the team with 27 points on nine goals and a team-best 18 assists. Foley is second on the team with 24 points on a team-high 14 goals and eight assists. Senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) ranks third with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. Nanji leads the Big Green defensemen with 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points. Senior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) and junior Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ontario) are tied for fifth with 11 points. Hobeika has five goals and six assists and Sharp has two goals and nine assists. Morgan Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) leads all freshmen with five points on five assists.
Holdcroft has played all but four games for Dartmouth. She has 423 saves, a .926 save percentage, a 1.86 goals against average, an 11-5-2 record and three shutouts in 1094:37 minutes.
The Big Green are averaging 3.00 goals per game, while allowing 2.14 goals against. The squad takes 31.2 shots per game and commits 3.90 penalties per game. Dartmouth is 17-for-111 on the power play, converting 15.3 percent of the time, and is 73-for-83 on the penalty kill at 88.0 percent.
WINNING SIX OF THE LAST SEVEN
Despite the fact that Dartmouth’s eight-game unbeaten streak
came to an end with the loss to Cornell, the Big Green have won six
of their last seven games.
Dating back to Jan. 10 against Providence at Fenway Park, Dartmouth has totaled 23 goals in the seven games, while only allowing 11.
January also proved to be a productive month for the Big
Green with the team going 8-1-1 for an .850 winning percentage.
Dartmouth went 1-0 (1.000) in just one game in December, 4-4 (.500)
in November and 1-1-1 (.500) in October.
A LOOK AT THE CONFERENCE STANDINGS
Cornell leads the conference with 28 points on a 14-2-0 record.
The Big Red lead Harvard by five points. The Crimson are in second
with 23 points and an 11-4-1 record. Dartmouth, Clarkson and
Quinnipiac are all tied for third with 22 points and identical
10-4-2 records. St. Lawrence, currently in sixth, is just two
points back of third with a 9-5-2 record and 20 points.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
With the two victories last weekend, Dartmouth remained in 10th in
both national polls. Wisconsin is the top-ranked team in the
USCHO.com poll and the USA HOCKEY/ESPN The Magazine
poll.
The highest-ranking ECAC Hockey team is Cornell who is
third in both polls. Harvard is eighth in the USCHO.com poll with
50 points and seventh in the USA Hockey poll with 73 points. The
Big Green received 27 points in the USCHO.com poll and 32 points in
the USA Hockey poll.
DOWN A SKATER; DOESN’T MATTER
For the second time this season, the Big Green scored a
shorthanded goal. On Saturday against Yale, Fischer tallied the
score 21 seconds after senior Moira
Scanlon committed a tripping penalty to put Dartmouth
down a skater. The goal pushed the Dartmouth lead to
5-0.
Sophomore Ali
Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) tallied the team’s
other shorthanded goal in the 5-2 win against Vermont on Jan.

APPROACHING MILESTONES
Dartmouth has two players approaching the 100-point plateau in
Dumais with 90 points and Foley with 93 points. Foley reached her
total in 105 games on 46 goals and 47 assists.
Dumais reached her total in 84 games on 37 goals and 53 assists. The players are looking to become the 33rd and 34th players in the history of the program to reach the century mark.
In just her second season, Holdcroft moved into a tie for
sixth on the career wins list. The Pittsburgh native improved her
career win total to 29 to tie Kate Lane ’06 for sixth
all-time. Holdcroft looks to move into a tie for fifth this weekend
as Kristen Bjork ’85 currently is in fifth with 31 victories.
Amy Ferguson ’03 holds the all-time record with 67
victories.
MOVING UP THE TOP TEN
With her four goals this weekend, Nanji passed 9 Sanders ’86
to move into eighth in the defenseman career goals scored list at
Dartmouth. Nanji entered the weekend with 26 career goals and now
has 30. Sanders finished her career with 27 and in seventh is Liz
Macri ’01 with 33. Correne Bredin ’02 has the all-time
mark with 44.
STAYING OUT OF THE BOX
After committing only seven penalties this weekend for 14 minutes,
the Big Green dropped their penalty miutes per game average to 7.8.
It tied for the second-lowest average in the nation with only
Quinnipiac (7.0) holding a lower total. Brown is also averaging 7.8
penalty minutes per game.
SHOTS-A-PLENTY
In the game at Yale, the Big Green fired 52 shots on net, which
not only set a new season high, but was the most shots for the Big
Green in over three years. Dartmouth took 52 shots in a 9-1 victory
at Brown on Jan. 10, 2009, which also marked the last time the Big
Green had more than 50 shots in a contest.
PINK AT THE RINK
Dartmouth is set to host Pink at the Rink this Saturday, Feb. 4
for the 4 p.m contest against Quinnipiac In recognition of the
fight against cancer fans are encouraged to wear pink to the
game.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free pink
t-shirt courtesy of JMH Wealth Management. There will also be
in-game raffle prizes including, future game tickets, a signed
hockey stick by the 2011-2012 Big Green team and a $50 gift
certificate to the Dartmouth Bookstore.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Big Green have been almost unbeatable away from Thompson Arena
this season. The victories against Yale and Brown improved
Dartmouth to 9-1-2 away from Thompson, including unbeaten in its
last 11 games. The team last lost on the road in the first game of
the season at fourth-ranked Boston College on Oct. 23.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Princeton enters Friday’s game with a 9-10-4 record overall,
are 7-7-2 in ECAC Hockey and are 5-2-1 in the Ivy League. The team
is in seventh in the conference with 16 points on a 7-7-2
record.
The Tigers last played an ECAC Hockey game back on Jan. 14 at Cornell and lost, 1-0. Princeton’s last win in the conference came on Jan. 13 at Colgate in a 5-3 victory.
Sophomore Sally Butler leads the team in points with 21 on a team-high 12 goals and nine assists. Sophomore Denna Laing is second with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. Freshman Ali Pankowski is in third with 12 points on two goals and 10 assists.
In net, senior Rachel Weber has played in all 23 games for Princeton. She has 644 saves, a .933 save percentage, a 1.99 goals against average, a 9-10-4 record and three shutouts in 1,387:49 minutes.
The Tigers are averaging 2.13 goals per game, while
allowing 2.09 goals against. The team takes 27.9 shots per game and
commits 5.10 penalties per games. On the power play, Princeton is
13-for-101 (12.9 percent) and is 98-for-115 (85.2 percent) on the
penalty kill.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday’s contest marks the 74th time that Dartmouth and
Princeton have competed on the ice. The Tigers lead the all-time
series, 38-29-6. The teams first met on January 24, 1978 at
Thompson Arena. Princeton won handily over the Big Green, 9-2. The
Tigers dominated the series early, winning 20 of the first 22
games. Dartmouth earned its first win in the series on February 10,
1985. Last season, the Big Green swept both games. The two teams
tied earlier this season at Princeton, 2-2, after Fischer tied the
game with 2:16 left in the third.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac enters the weekend with a 15-10-2 record overall and
are 10-4-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Bobcats are tied with Dartmouth and
Clarkson for third in the conference with 22 points. Quinnipiac
went 1-1 last weekend, hosting Syracuse on Friday and Saturday. The
Bobcats won on Friday by shutting out the Orange, 3-0. Syracuse
responded the next night, winning 3-2 on Quinnipiac’s home
ice. The Bobcats are 2-2-1 in their last five games.
Sophomore Kelly Babstock leads the team in points with 28, goals with 12 and assists with 16. Freshman Nicole Kosta is second in points with four goals and 15 assists for 19 points. Juniors Breann Frykas and Regan Boulton are tied for third with 13 points. Frykas has seven goals and six assists and Boulton has six goals and seven assists.
In net, junior Victoria Vigilanti has played in 23 of Quinnipiac’s 27 games. Vigilanti has 449 saves, a .903 save percentage, a 2.27 goals against average, an 11-8-2 record and six shutouts in 1267:23 minutes.
The Bobcats are averaging 2.41 goals per game, while
allowing 2.19 goals against. The team takes 30.8 shots per game and
commits 3.50 penalties per games. On the power play, Quinnipiac is
15-for-110 (13.6 percent) and is 77-for-91 (84.6 percent) on the
penalty kill.
SERIES HISTORY
When Dartmouth and Quinnipiac play Saturday it will be for only
the 14th time. The Big Green lead the all-time series, 8-3-2. The
squads first met on January 5, 2005 at Thompson Arena. Dartmouth
won the game easily, 5-2. The Bobcats earned a tie in the next
game, but didn’t garner a victory in the series until two
years ago on November 14, 2009. The teams split the two games last
season with each winning on the road. The Big Green earned a 3-2
victory at Quinnipiac earlier this season on Jan. 6.
