Team Notes: No. 9 Dartmouth Hosts Clarkson in First Round
HANOVER, N.H. —The Big Green are back in the ECAC tournament after missing the postseason last year. Dartmouth secured the third seed in the tournament by sweeping its last home weekend of the season. The team upset second-ranked Cornell, 4-2, and held on for a 4-3 victory over Colgate.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth ended the regular season playing its best
hockey of the year. The Big Green have won 10 out of their last 11
games, including an upset of the second-ranked team in the country,
Cornell, last Friday. Dartmouth finished the regular season with a
19-9-0 record overall, a 15-7-0 mark in the ECAC and a 7-3-0 record
in the Ivy League. The team finished in third place in the ECAC and
second in the Ivy League.
Dartmouth ended the regular season with six players with over 20 points and nine skaters with double-digit points. Sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) leads the team with 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points. Two players are tied for second on the team with 29 points. Junior Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) has a team-best 17 goals and 12 assists, and senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) has 14 goals and 15 assists. Sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) is fourth with 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists. Junior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) has 26 points on eight goals and a team-high 18 assists. Junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) is next with 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists, Sophomore Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, MInn.) has 19 points, junior Geneva Kliman (Toronto, Ont.) has 13 points and sophomore Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ont.) has 11 points. Overall, the Big Green have had 17 players record a point and 14 players tally a goal and an assist.
In net, freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has solidified herself as the team’s top goaltender. Holdcroft has started 21 games and played 1240:12 minutes. She has 427 saves, a 2.08 goals against average, a 15-6-0 record, a .909 save percentage and four shutouts. Sophomore Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) has started seven games, totaling 442:41 minutes. She has 132 saves, a 2.17 goals against average, a 4-3-0 record and a .892 save percentage.
The team is averaging 3.50 goals per game, while allowing 2.18 goals per game. The offense has been aggressive, taking 33.0 shots per game. On the power play, the Big Green have scored goals on 32 of their 141 chances or 22.7 percent of the time. On the penalty kill, Dartmouth has allowed goals on 12 out of the 126 chances.
BEST OF THREE
Dartmouth begins a best-of-three series against Clarkson on
Friday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 p.m. All the games will be played at
Thompson Arena with Saturday’s game at 2 p.m., and if
necessary Sunday’s contest at 2 p.m. This is the first time
Clarkson and Dartmouth have met in the ECAC playoffs. It marks the
20th trip to the tournament for the Big Green. The squad last made
it in 2009 and won the tournament by beating Rensselaer, 6-1.
FINALISTS
Head coach Mark Hudak and junior assistant captain Reagan Fischer
are both finalists for ECAC postseason awards. Hudak is one of
three in the running for the women’s coach of the year award.
The other finalists for the award are Cornell’s Doug Derraugh
and Quinnipiac’s Rick Seeley.
Fischer was named a finalist for the ECAC’s best
defensive forward. On the season, she has eight goals and 18
assists for 26 points. The two other players up for the award are
Rensselaer’s Alisa Harrison and Cornell’s Karlee
Overguard.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The Big Green swept the ECAC conference awards this week, taking
all three honors. Amanda Trunzo earned the MLX Skates Player of the
week honor after tallying four assists over the weekend. She
assisted on both game-winning goals for Dartmouth and had three
assists in the win over Cornell.
Lindsay Holdcroft won both the MLX Skates Rookie of the week and the MLX Skates Goaltender of the week awards. She made 57 saves in the two games and improved her season record to 15-6-0.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Clarkson enters the weekend with a 13-15-6 record overall and a
10-8-4 mark in the ECAC. The Golden Knights finished sixth in the
conference with 24 points. The team is hot at the right time,
finishing the season with a 6-2-3 record over its final 11 games.
Last weekend, Clarkson won two road games to secure its spot in the
tournament over Rensselaer and Union.
At Rensselaer, the Golden Knights used two goals in the first period to earn a 2-1 victory. Junior Juana Baribeau scored the first goal and freshman Jamie-Lee Rattray added the game-winning goal a minute later. At Union, Clarkson scored in every period and cruised to a 4-0 win. Baribeau had two goals to lead the team. Senior Melissa Waldie and sophomore Danielle Skirrow each added a goal.
Waldie leads the team with 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists. Freshman Carly Mercer is second on the team with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points. Rattray is third with 21 points on six goals and 15 assists. Baribeau is fourth with nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points.
In net, freshman Erica Howe has started 19 games and
played 1,243:19 minutes. She has 498 saves, a .931 save percentage,
a 1.79 goals against average, a 9-5-5 record and two
shutouts.
SERIES HISTORY
The contest will be the 19th time the
two teams have met on the ice. Dartmouth leads the all-time series,
10-5-3. The first meeting between the two schools took place on
February 10, 1979. The Golden Knights won the contest, 3-2, in
overtime at Thompson Arena. The two squads split their meetings
this season with each team winning on the road. On Jan. 14, the Big
Green lost in overtime to the Golden Knights, 3-2. Foley and Nanji
each scored goals. At Clarkson on Feb. 12, Dartmouth fell behind
1-0, but scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1
win.
