Team Notes: No. 10 Dartmouth Ready for Final Weekend of Regular Season
HANOVER, N.H. — Last weekend, the
Big Green played at St. Lawrence and Clarkson, earning wins in both
contests. Against the Saints, junior Moira Scanlon (Chicago, Ill.)
broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period to give the Big Green a
3-2 victory. At Clarkson on Saturday, Dartmouth fell behind 1-0,
but scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 win. The victories
avenged two home losses Dartmouth suffered against the Saints and
the Golden Knights earlier this season.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth ends the regular season this weekend, hosting Cornell on
Friday and Colgate on Saturday for Senior Night and Pink at the
Rink. The Big Green enter the weekend with a 17-9-0 overall record
and a 13-7-0 mark in the ECAC. Dartmouth has won eight of its last
nine games to move up the standings in the league.
Multiple skaters have tallied points for Dartmouth, with sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) leading the way. Dumais leads the team with 27 points on 11 goals and 16 assists. Junior Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) is second on the team with 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. Three players are tied for third on the team with 25 points. Senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) has 14 goals and 11 assists, sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) has 13 goals and 12 assists and junior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) has eight goals and a team-best 17 assists. Junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) is sixth with eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points. Sophomore Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) is seventh with 18 points. Lauren Kelly (Milton, Ont.) leads the freshman class with six points on one goal and five assists. Overall, the squad has had 17 players who have recorded a point, and had 14 players record a goal and an assist.
In net, freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has solidified herself as the team’s top goaltender. Holdcroft has started 19 games and played 1120:12 minutes. She has 370 saves, a 2.04 goals against average, a 13-6-0 record, a .907 save percentage and four shutouts. Sophomore Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) has started seven games, totaling 442:41 minutes. She has 132 saves, a 2.17 goals against average, a 4-3-0 record and a .892 save percentage.
The team is averaging 3.46 goals per game, while allowing 2.15 goals per game. The offense has been aggressive, taking 33.1 shots per game. On the power play, the Big Green have scored goals on 29 of their 127 chances or 22.8 percent of the time. On the penalty kill, Dartmouth has allowed goals on 10 out of the 117 chances.
PLAYOFF UPDATE
Dartmouth clinched a spot in the conference tournament last
weekend and is playing for a top-four spot this weekend. Dartmouth
can secure a top-four spot (which garners home ice in the first
round) with a win or tie against Cornell or Colgate. Dartmouth
could also clinch a top four spot if Princeton losses or ties
either of its two games. The Tigers play at Brown and Yale this
weekend. The Big Green could finish as high as second or as low as
fifth. Cornell leads the conference, and has clinched the
number-one seed with a 19-0-1 ECAC mark.
SENIOR NIGHT
The game against Colgate marks the final home regular season game
for the 2011 senior class. Larissa Roche (Thorhild, Alta.) has
played in 90 games, scored three goals and tallied six assists in
her career. Alyssa Boehm (Waterford, Conn.) has played in 112
games, scored nine goals has two assists and 11 points. Captain
Katie Horner (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has played 104 games, scored
one goal and tallied 11 assists. Amanda Trunzo has played in 116
games, scored 65 goals, tallied 52 points and recorded 117 career
points. All four players were on the 2007-08 and 2008-09 teams that
made the NCAA playoffs.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell enters the weekend with a 25-1-1 record overall and are
first in the conference with a 19-0-1 mark. The Big Red have been
either ranked first or second in the national polls all season and
currently are ranked second in both polls. The team’s only
loss came on Nov. 2 against Mercyhurst in overtime.
This past weekend, Cornell easily beat Brown and Yale at home. The Big Red shut out the Bears, 8-0, and cruised to a 7-1 victory over Yale.
Two players are tied for the team lead with 41 points. Freshman Brianne Jenner has 21 goals and 20 assists, and junior Rebecca Johnston has 21 goals and 20 assists. Junior Chelsea Karpenko is third on the team with 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists.
In net, freshman Lauren Slebodnick has seen a majority of the
action recently and has started 10 games and played 652:44 minutes.
She has 195 saves, a .965 save percentage, a 0.64 goals against
average, a 9-0-1 record and five shutouts.
SERIES HISTORY
Cornell and Dartmouth will meet for the 69th time on Friday. The
Big Green lead the series, 39-23-6. The first meeting took place on
February 16, 1979 at Thompson Arena, with the Big Red earning an
easy victory, 8-1. Dartmouth didn’t get its first victory in
the series until 1983 in a 3-0 victory at Cornell. The Big Green
dominated the series in the 2000’s with Dartmouth winning 19
in a row that ended on February 14, 2009, when the two teams tied
at Cornell. The Big Red won both contests last season. Earlier this
season, Cornell beat the Big Green at home, 6-1, on Nov. 2.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate enters the weekend with an 11-17-3 record overall and are
8-10-2 in the ECAC. The Raiders are tied for seventh in the
conference with Rensselaer, but are only two points ahead of St.
Lawrence for ninth place. Colgate is 4-1-1 in its last six games
including two wins last weekend over Yale and Brown
Against Yale at home on Feb. 11, the Raiders scored one goal off the stick of Brittany Phillips to earn a 1-0 victory. Against the Bears on Feb. 12, the Raiders had three players score in a 4-1 win.
Sophomore Brittany Phillips leads the team with 33 points on 15 goals and 18 assists. Sophomore Jenna Klynstra is second with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists. Senior Jessi Waters has three goals and 17 assists for 20 points.
Junior Kimberly Sass has started 15 games for Colgate and played
905:41 minutes in net. She has 380 saves, a .909 save percentage, a
2.52 goals against average, a 5-8-2 record and four shutouts.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will mark the 34th match up between the two schools. The
Big Green have controlled the series with a 26-5-2 record. The two
teams first met on February 17, 1978 at Colgate, with Dartmouth
winning, 8-0. The squads played twice in the 70’s, but then
didn’t play each other again until 2002. The Big Green won
the first 16 games in the series, but the Raiders won the season
series last year, 1-0-1. The teams tied at Colgate, 5-5, and then
the Raiders won at Thompson Arena, 6-4. Dartmouth won at Colgate
earlier this season, 6-2, on Nov. 5.
