Team Notes: No. 9 Dartmouth Prepped for Harvard
HANOVER, N.H. — The ninth-ranked Big Green hosted Clarkson last weekend in a best-of-three series in the first round of the ECAC tournament. The Golden Knights came out on fire in the first game and scored three goals in the first period. The Big Green added a goal late, but fell, 4-1. In game two, Clarkson scored the first goal of the game, but Dartmouth responded by scoring four goals in the last two periods to win, 4-2.
In the deciding game three, the Big Green trailed 3-2 with five
minutes remaining in the third period. After committing a
five-minute major penalty, Dartmouth was shorthanded, but junior
Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) scored the game-tying goal with 58
seconds remaining. Sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.)
scored the game-winning goal 18:37 into the first overtime.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Multiple skaters have tallied points for Dartmouth, with Dumais
leading the way. Dumais leads the team with 34 points on 16 goals
and 18 assists. Senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) is second on
the team with 33 points on 15 goals and 18 assists. Junior Kelly
Foley (Boston, Mass.) is third with 17 goals and 14 assists for 31
points. Sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) is third with 14
goals and 15 assists for 29 points. Fischer is fifth on the team
with nine goals and a team-leading 19 assists for 28 points.
Overall, the squad has had 17 players who have recorded a point,
and had 14 players record a goal and an assist.
In net, freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has come late in the season to solidify herself as the starting goaltender. Holdcroft has started 24 games on the season and played 1438:26 minutes. She has 502 saves, a 2.17 goals against average, a 17-7-0 record, a .906 save percentage and four shutouts. Sophomore Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) has started seven games, totaling 442:41 minutes. She has 132 saves, a 2.17 goals against average, a 4-3-0 record and a .892 save percentage.
The team is averaging 3.45 goals per game, while allowing 2.26 goals per game. The offense has been aggressive, taking 33.9 shots per game. On the power play, the Big Green have scored goals on 36 of their 159 chances or 22.6 percent of the time. On the penalty kill, Dartmouth has allowed goals on 14 out of the 135 chances.
ENTERING THE TOP TEN
Trunzo entered an elite club on Saturday when she scored an empty
net goal in the 4-2 victory over Clarkson. It marked her 66th
career goal, which tied her for ninth on the all-time list. She
tied former teammate Sarah Parsons ’10 and Estey Ticknor
’85. Trunzo needs two more goals to tie Kim Reid ’94
for eighth.
Trunzo now has 125 points for her career, which moved her into a
tie for 18th on the all-time scoring list.
NANJI IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Playing as a defenseman, Nanji is scoring goals at a rate few have
done in Dartmouth history at her position. She has 14 goals on the
season, which is the fourth highest single-season total by a
defenseman ever at Dartmouth. She also has 32 goals in her career
from the back line, which is the eighth highest total in the
history of the program.
POSTSEASON AWARDS
The Ivy League and the ECAC both announced their postseason awards
this past week, and the Big Green had players on both lists. In the
Ivy League, Foley made the first team, Trunzo made the second team
and Nanji and Lindsay Holdcroft garnered honorable mention
status.
In the ECAC honors, Foley made the second team and Nanji made the third team. Fischer also was a co-recipient of the best defensive forward award with Cornell’s Karlee Overguard.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard hosted St. Lawrence last weekend in the first round of the
ECAC tournament. The Crimson dominated the two games, winning the
first 6-1 and the second 8-3. In its last six games, Harvard is 4-2
with the losses coming against nationally ranked Boston College and
Cornell.
Sophomore Jillian Dempsey leads the team with 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists. Senior Kate Buesser is second with a team-leading 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points. Senior Liza Ryabkina is third on the team with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists.
In net, sophomore Laura Bellamy has seen a majority of the minutes in net, starting 28 games and played 1702:25 minutes. She has 550 saves, a .897 save percentage, a 2.22 goals against average, a 16-9-3 record and four shutouts.
The Crimson are averaging 3.10 goals per game, while allowing
2.32 goals per game. Harvard takes 32.6 shots per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Dartmouth and Harvard will play for the 82nd time on Thursday. The
Big Green lead the series, 42-36-3. The squads first met on January
11, 1978 at Harvard. Dartmouth won the contest 9-2, and took three
of the first five. The Crimson have controlled the series of late,
winning eight of the last nine contests. The Crimson won both games
when the two teams played back in November. At Harvard, the Crimson
won, 5-3, and at Thompson Arena, Harvard won, 3-2.
