Team Notes: Big Green Open at Home

HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team will begin its 34th varsity season and eighth under head coach Mark Hudak on Friday at home against Brown at 5 p.m.  The Big Green play a day later when they host Yale at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

100-POINT HOLES
Dartmouth has two 100-point holes to fill in its front line this season. The Big Green lost two of its top three scorers from last season. Sarah Parsons '10 ended her career with 156 points, which is eighth-best all-time. Jenna Cunningham '10 finished her career with 125 points, which is 18th-best all-time. The frontline led by Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) will look to replace the high-scoring duo.

OPENING ON HOME ICE
The Dartmouth women's hockey team opens the regualer season at home against Brown. The last time the squad opened on home ice was in the 2007-08 season when it earned a 4-3 overtime victory over Vermont. The Big Green have fared well when they don't have to go on the road to start the season. In 14 contests, Dartmouth is 12-2 when its first game is at home. In season opening games, the Big Green are 24-9.

REACHING MILESTONES
Amanda Trunzo is moving closer and closer to joining the Big Green's 100-point club. Coming into this season, the senior has 51 goals and 41 assists for 92 career points. If she reaches the mark she will be the 32nd player in the program's history to total 100 points. The last two players to score 100 were Trunzo's frontline teammates, Sarah Parsons '10 and Jenna Cunningham '10, last season. Trunzo is also within shouting distance of putting her name on the career goals score record book. The forward needs 15 goals to tie for tenth place all-time. She scored  18 goals last season.

MULTIPLE GOALS
Last year, Dartmouth had no trouble winning games when it scored four or more goals, but was winless when it scored three or less. In the 14 games in which the Big Green scored four or more goals they were 12-1-1. In the 14 games when the team scored three or less it was 0-13-1. Dartmouth hopes to continue its trend of winning when it scores a bunch, but also looks to improve its record in low-scoring contests.

POWER PLAY
The Big Green power play unit was one of the best in the nation last season, and will look to reach the same mark this year. In 2009-10, Dartmouth converted 20.8% of its power play chances, which was fourth best in the nation. The squad also averaged over one power play goal per game. Coach Hudak contributed the success to working on odd-man situations in practice, which is what the team is looking for in power-play situations.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
Brown comes into Thompson Arena with a 0-1 record. The Bears opened their season at eighth-ranked Boston College on Sunday, October 24 and lost 5-2.  The Eagles scored the first two goals of the contest and never looked back.
Two different players scored for Brown. Sophomore Laurie Jolin put the first one in the net off an assist from Alena Polenska. Katelyn Landry put the Bears second goal on the scoreboard off a deflection from freshman Jennifer Nedow.
Senior Erica Kromm led the team last year with seven assists and was second on the team with 10 points. Polenska scored the second most goals last season with five. Sophomore Katie Jamieson returns in net. She made 855 saves and had three shutouts her freshman year. Jamison made 24 saves in forty minutes against BC.

SERIES HISTORY
The two Ivy League foes will match up for the 72nd time in their history.  Brown won the first contest at home on January 13, 1979. The Bears won the first four before the Big Green earned their first victory in the series in 1982. The two teams have gone back and forth throughout the series with Dartmouth gaining the edge recently. The squad holds a 35-28-8 advantage over Brown and have gained the series lead by winning the last eight contests. The Bears last won in 2006 at home.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale comes into the weekend with a 0-1-1 record after it lost and tied last weekend at Vermont. In the first game on Friday, October 22, the Catamounts struck early and often, in the 4-1 rout. Freshman Jenna Ciotti scored the lone goal for Yale in the second period.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs switched their goaltender and earned a 1-1 tie.  Genny Ladisges made 31 saves in her first start of the season to earn the tie. Another freshman scored for Yale with Patricia McGauley netting the first goal of her career.
This season is the first for new head coach Joakim Flygh. He takes over a Bulldogs squad after being an assistant coach at Harvard the last three seasons.  Yale returns its top scorer from last season in senior Bray Ketchum. She scored 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists.  On defense, the Bulldogs return all but one player from last season, which includes captain Samantha MacLean.

SERIES HISTORY

It will be the 71st meeting between the two teams. Dartmouth has dominated the series, 64-4-2. The two squads tied in the first meeting on January 27, 1978 in Hanover. The Big Green have won the last four in the series. Yale plays at Harvard on Friday, October 29.
