Dartmouth Announces Team Awards

HANOVER, NH - Senior captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) was voted the Big Green’s Most Valuable Player by her teammates as the Dartmouth women’s hockey team released its 2009-10 team award winners.

Parsons posted 40 points on 20 goals and 20 assists to lead the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey. Her 20 scores was a new career-high in a Big Green uniform. Thirty-three of the 40 points came in ECAC Hockey play. Parsons finished the year on a six-game point streak and led the team with 13 multi-point games and had five in the last nine games of the year.

She was named a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top women’s hockey player in the nation, and competed last weekend at the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge in Detroit. Parsons concluded her career with 156 total points, which places her eighth all-time. The 66 goals she scored in her career made the top-10, while her 90 helpers are tied with Carly Haggard ’03 for seventh all-time. She was also named Academic All-Ivy for the second-straight year and has been a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award each of the last two seasons.

Rookie Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) was named the team’s rookie of the year after an excellent first season as a late recruit to Hanover. Dumais was a tremendous rookie competitor for Dartmouth and made the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team. She finished one point behind Laura Fortino of Cornell for the league-lead among freshmen as she recorded 25 points. Her 10 tallies were third in the conference and her 15 assists put her second. In just her third game she posted two goals against then No. 7 St. Lawrence in a 4-3 win and followed that with a seasons best four points at Brown on Nov. 20 with a goal and three assists. Dumais was alongside tough competition as three all-rookie selections also earned first team honors.

Junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) was selected as the Big Green’s Offensive Player of the Year. She finished the year with 33 points on 18 goals and 15 assists. Both marks were second on the team and her five power play goals ranked third on the squad. She has 51 goals and 41 assists in her three seasons and is knocking on the door of the 100-point club with 92 points with another season to go in a Dartmouth uniform. Fourteen of her 18 goals came in conference play and 11 of her 15 helpers as well. Trunzo posted 11 multi-point games and three games with at least two goals. Her best output came against Colgate in the second game of the season with two goals and an assist for three points.

The Big Green’s Most Improved Player Award went to freshman Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.), who had a great first campaign as a definite presence in front of the net for Dartmouth. As a center for the third line to begin the season, Komarek jumped up to the second line towards the end of the season and finished with 15 points on three goals and 12 assists. All three marks were third on the team among first year players. In only her third game she recorded two assists in the win over seventh-ranked St. Lawrence and did the same in three more games. Two of those contests came in the last home weekend series against Yale and Brown, which kept Dartmouth in the playoff picture.

Senior goaltender Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) was named Dartmouth’s Defensive Player of the Year after her final season. Lacina was the primary netminder for the Big Green with 23 games played and 20 starts between the pipes. She finished with a career-high eight victories and recorded a .898 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average. Lacina made a season-high 37 stops at Princeton on Jan. 9 in a 4-3 loss and had a season-low one goal allowed twice with one coming in the win over then 10th-ranked Princeton.

The Unsung Hero Award, which is given to senior goaltender Sarah Kennedy (Jasper, Alta.). Kennedy saw her first action in more than a year in the final game on the ice of Thompson Arena against Brown on Feb. 6, making one save in her three-plus minutes of game action. Despite her injuries, she dressed for all of Dartmouth’s games this season and was an inspiration for all of her teammates. Kennedy is instrumental in team activities and being that spirited player on the bench during games.

Dartmouth has yet to name captains for the 2010-11 season, the announcement of the leaders for next year’s squad will come prior to the start of next season.
