Big Red Open Season as Targets

ITHACA -- You can learn a lot about a team in its season debut, even if those games are losses.
That's what the Cornell women's hockey team proved to coach Doug Derraugh last year, when Mercyhurst -- one of the nation's top programs -- rolled into Lynah Rink in October. The Big Red dropped both games, 4-1, but left an impression.
"Yes, we lost them both, but I remember coming in and speaking with the assistant coaches," Derraugh said. "I sat down with them and said, 'I think we've got a shot at this.'"
