Johnston Leads Canada to Gold at Four Nations Cup
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland -- Cornell junior Rebecca Johnston
scored a pair of goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lead
the Canadian National Team to a 3-2 victory over the United States
in the gold medal game of the 4 Nations Cup on Saturday in St.
John's, Newfoundland.
Johnston scored the game's opening goal for Canada at the 16:46
mark of the first period, then was doubly instrumental in scoring
the overtime game-winner. Johnston was dragged down on a partial
breakaway by USA defenseman Kacey Bellamy, who was injured on the
play while being assessed a minor penalty and taken off the ice on
a stretcher. On the ensuing power play, Johnston tapped in the
power-play game-winner to send Canada to its first international
championship since the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, a
championship that Johnston was on the roster for.
Johnston finished the tournament tied with three other Canadian
teammates for the tournament lead with four goals, while adding in
three assists for seven points to rank tied for third in the
tournament. She was joined on the Canadian roster for the 4
Nations Cup was fellow Cornell player Brianne Jenner, who appeared
in all four of Canada's games but did not record a point.
The Big Red was off this weekend but returns to action on Friday,
Nov. 19, with a 3 p.m. contest against Princeton at Lynah Rink.
Cornell, ranked second in the nation in the most recent USA
Today/USA Hockey poll, is in the midst of a seven-game home stand
and holds a 6-1 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark in ECAC
Hockey.
