ITHACA -- The Cornell women's hockey team will be without its best player from a season ago, and to kick things off, the Big Red won't get a break.

Cornell opens the 2009-10 season with a two-game road series Friday against last year's Division I national runner-up, Mercyhurst. The Lakers are also the top-ranked team in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online poll.

Rebecca Johnston, who had a team-leading 25 goals and 45 points last season as a sophomore, and prized recruit Brianne Jenner will miss the entire season because they'll be playing for Team Canada at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Neither is enrolled in classes this scholastic year, meaning Johnston will have two years of eligibility remaining, and Jenner four.
