Big Red Adds Nine to Roster

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell head coach Doug Derraugh has announced that an eight-member class of 2012 along with a junior transfer will join the Big Red on the ice this season. The class hails from three different states and three provinces and includes four defensemen, four forwards and a goaltender. 

The Big Red will open its 2008-09 campaign in exhibition play on Oct. 17-18 facing Stony Creek and Durham. Cornell will open its regular season by traveling to Vermont Oct. 24-25. Last season the Big Red finished in eighth place in ECAC Hockey with a 9-12-1 mark in league play, and was 12-17-1 overall.

       Big Red Biographies  

Ashley Duffy (5-8, Defense, Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's)

Duffy was a five-time letter winner at Benilde-St. Margaret's, where she was three-time all-conference. She was named to the Twin Cities All-Metro second team in 2008, and was named MVP of the Minnesota girl's hockey championships game in 2004. Duffy served as alternate team captain during the 2006-07 season, and participated in the USA Hockey girl's 15/16 select player development camp in 2006. She was also a five-time letter winner in lacrosse, playing as a midfielder and attacker.  

Derraugh on Duffy: "Ashley is a gifted skater with a long, smooth stride. She shows great offensive instincts and strength in defensive play."  

Stephanie Holmes (5-7, Forward, Rye, N.Y./University of New Hampshire)
Holmes joins the Big Red after playing two seasons at the University of New Hampshire. Last season, UNH advanced to the semifinals at the Frozen Four and was ranked No. 2 in the nation. Holmes totaled 32 points in two seasons, including 15 goals and 17 assists. She was a two-time Hockey East all-academic team member. Prior to playing at New Hampshire, she totaled 213 career points at Berkshire and helped her team to a New England title in 2006. Her father, Michael, played hockey at Elmira College and played professionally in the AHL and in Europe.

Chelsea Karpenko (5-6, Forward, Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds)

Karpenko was the captain for Team Manitoba in 2007-08, and an assistant for the U18 Canadian National Team. She helped Team Manitoba to win a silver medal at the Canada Winter Games and a bronze at the Canadian Nationals in 2007. Karpenko joined teammate Rebecca Johnston in helping the U22 Canadian National Team win a three-game exhibition series against the USA. She was named the Saskatchewan Female Midget Hockey League MVP and was selected to the 2008 all-star team. Karpenko also played hockey at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, and was selected to the 2007 Saskatchewan 3A soccer all-star team. She also played volleyball and rugby.  

Derraugh on Karpenko: "Chelsea has excellent stick skills, and exceptional finishing ability combined with an intense and passionate competitive drive."  

Jess Martino (5-5, Defense, Winthrop, Mass./East Coast Wizards)
A four-time letter winner, Martino served as captain her junior and senior seasons at Buckingham Browne and Nichols. As a senior, she was named team MVP and was a three-time all-league team member. Martino was awarded with the 1933 Award her senior year, which is given to the outstanding student athlete, and she also received the Coaches' Cup. Martino was also a four-time letter winner in softball as a catcher. She served as captain her senior season, and was a two-time all-league honoree. With two letters in field hockey, Martino was all-league her junior year. After graduation, she spent one year playing hockey at Cushing Academy. Martino also participated in the national development program for four years.   

Derraugh on Martino: "Jess uses her exceptional puck handling skills and good hockey sense to create time, space and offensive opportunities for her teammates."  

Amanda Mazzotta (5-5, Goaltender, London, Ont./London Devilettes)
Mazzotta played goalie for Team Ontario, helping win gold at the Canada Winter Games in 2007, and she was named team MVP. She was also a member of the U18 Canadian National team that won the silver medal at the IIHF World Women's Hockey Championships. At St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School she also played golf and soccer. Mazzota also served as the minister of sports for the St. Thomas Aquinas Student Council.

Kendice Ogilvie (5-7, Forward, Delburne, Alta./Red Deer Chiefs)
Ogilvie served as assistant captain for Team Alberta in 2008, and she helped her team win a silver medal at the Western Canada championships. With the Red Deer Chiefs, she led her team to a league championship in 2008. Ogilvie was named the top forward on Alberta last season, and she was a silver medalist at the Mac's Tournament where she was the top point scorer. She played in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League for four seasons, and was named to the all-star team in 2008. Ogilvie  plays softball and her team won the Alberta Summer Games in 2006, and she also played volleyball at Delburne Centralized School where she was captain her senior year.  

Derraugh on Ogilvie: "Kendice is a power forward with very strong hands and the ability to get shots on net in tight spaces with little time."  

Jenna Paulson (5-9, Defense, Toronto, Ont./Toronto Aeros)
Paulson played for the Toronto Aeros, and helped lead her team to a Provincial Women's Hockey League Championship in 2007. At Earl Haig Secondary School, she was her class valedictorian and won the Principal's Award for academic achievement. Paulson served as the promotions executive for the visual arts council at her school.  

Derraugh on Paulson: "Jenna is a powerful, athletic presence on the blue line, with long reach, and exceptional technical defensive skills."  

Catherine White (5-9, Forward, Brampton, Ont./Mississauga Chiefs)
As a member of Team Ontario, White helped her team to the gold medal at the Canadian Winter Games, With the U18 Canadian National Team, she scored the first goal in the first ever ice hockey exhibition series against the USA. White also won the gold medal at the U18 Nationals, and was a member of the silver medal winning team at the 2008 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship. From 2002-2008, White won seven medals in the Provincial Women's Hockey League, including a gold and silver medal.  She also played soccer for the Ontario Youth Soccer League, where she led her team to a silver medal at the Minnesota USA cup.  

Derraugh on White: "Catherine combines soft hands and exceptional playmaking ability with her outstanding skating stride to make her a dangerous offensive threat every time she hits the ice."  

Amanda Young (5-6, Defense, Lacombe, Alta./Red Deer Chiefs)
Young played with teammate Kendice Ogilvie on both the Red Deer Chiefs and Team Alberta. During the 2007-08 season, she was the top scoring defenseman in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Young served as captain of the Red Deer Chiefs last season, and she was a member of the gold medal team at the Alberta provincials tournament. In 2008, she led her team to a silver medal at the Canadian Western tournament where she was named the tournament's best defenseman and was named a first-team all-star. Young's brother, Jeff, plays hockey at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.  

Derraugh on Young: "Amanda is a fluid, and explosive skater with superb vision. She's also a tenacious 1 v 1 defender who prides herself on shutting down the opponent's top forward."
