Team Notes: Colgate Faces Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the Road
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate women's
hockey team will hit the road once again this weekend when it
travels to Clarkson and St. Lawrence for a pair of ECAC Hockey
matchups on Jan. 27 and 28 respectively.
The Raiders are coming off a tough 4-3 overtime loss to No. 10/10
Dartmouth on Friday night before falling to No. 9/9 Harvard 4-0 on
Saturday afternoon. Senior Kimberly
Sass had a total of 74 saves in the two games, with
43 against the Big Green.
LEAGUE PLAY
Colgate (8-16-1, 3-10-1 ECAC Hockey) is currently sitting in the
10th spot in the ECAC Hockey standings above Union and Yale. The
team has seven points from three wins over Yale, Princeton and
Union, and a 1-1 overtime tie with Brown. On top of the standings
is No. 2/2 Cornell with 26 points. The Raiders will need to battle
back and catch up to Brown if they want to secure one of the eight
spots in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The Bears have 12 points from a
4-6-4 league mark.
POINT LEADERS
Junior Brittany
Phillips continues to lead Colgate with 27 points
from 12 goals and 15 assists. She is tied for 11th in program
history for power play goals in a season with five, is ninth with
80 career points, tied for eighth with 38 career goals and 10th in
career assists with 42. Phillips is followed by
sophomore Jocelyn
Simpson and freshman Melissa
Kueber. Simpson has 16 points from seven goals and nine
assists while Kueber has 10 goals and five assists for 15
points.
SERIES
The all-time series with Clarkson is tied at 6-6-4 since the teams
first met in the 2003-04 season. Colgate has a 2-3-3 record on the
road against the Golden Knights, with its only two wins coming
early in the series. Last season, the Raiders won the first matchup
5-2 in Starr Rink and then tied with Clarkson in their second game
2-2 in Potsdam, N.Y.
St. Lawrence leads the all-time series, owning a 16-6-2 record
since the teams first met in the 1999-00 season. The Saints holds a
12-3 advantage against Colgate in Canton, N.Y. The Raiders' most
recent road win was 2-1 in the second game of the 2009-10 season.
St. Lawrence won both matchups last season.
SCOUTING CLARKSON
The Golden Knights (14-7-5, 8-4-2 ECAC Hockey) are coming off a
two-game set against St. Lawrence, dropping the first matchup 3-2
before tying with the Saints in the second game 1-1 in overtime.
The team is currently sitting in sixth place with 18 points tied
with Dartmouth and St. Lawrence. Its only four league losses were
to Harvard twice, Union and the Saints.
Clarkson is led by sophomores Carly Mercer and Jamie Lee Rattray
as well as junior Danielle Skirrow. Mercer has 30 points from 12
goals and 18 assists. She is followed by Rattray who has 27 points
from 12 goals and 15 assists while Skirrow has a team-best 13 goals
and eight assists for 21 points. Defending the net is sophomore
Erica Howe who has a 14-7-5 record, a 1.79 goals against average
and a total of 585 saves for a .927 save percentage.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
The Saints (14-7-4, 8-4-2 ECAC Hockey) are coming off a 3-2 win
and a 1-1 overtime tie with Clarkson in a two-game set last
weekend. The team, which is on a nine-game unbeaten streak, is
currently fifth in the league standings with 18 points, tied with
the Golden Knights and Dartmouth. It's only conference losses were
to Harvard twice, Dartmouth and Quinnipiac.
St. Lawrence is led by ECAC Hockey Player of the Week sophomore
Rylee Smith, junior Kelly Sabatine and graduate student Karell
Emard. Smith has 27 points from 11 goals and 16 assists while
Sabatine has 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points and Emard has 24
points from nine goals and 15 helpers. In goal the team is lead by
ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week Carmen MacDonald who has an 11-4-3
record, a 2.08 goals against average, and a total of 473 saves for
a .927 save percentage.
ECAC PRESEASON POLL
The Colgate women's ice hockey team was picked to finish ninth in
the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll that was released on Sept.
15. The Raiders received 41 points for ninth place above Yale,
Brown and Union. Two-time defending regular-season and tournament
champion Cornell was picked to finish first with 121 votes and 11
first-place votes.
2012 AUTISM AWARENESS PROJECT
The Colgate women's hockey team will kick off its second annual
Autism Awareness Project during its home contest against Union on
Feb. 3 at Starr Rink. The project, which was first launched in
January, 2011, was created in support of team manager and avid
Colgate women's hockey fan, Kati Williams, a local teenager from
Norwich, N.Y. who has Asperger's Syndrome.
This year, the women's hockey team is looking to build on the
momentum it created in 2011 by adding new and exciting elements to
the project through new partnerships and initiatives. The Raiders'
goals are to raise $30,000, broaden their outreach efforts, and
provide resources and networking for people on the autism
spectrum.
