Team Notes: Colgate Hosts Brown and Yale
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate women's
hockey team will resume ECAC Hockey play this weekend with a pair
of home matchups against Brown and Yale at Starr Rink. The team
will first face the Bears on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. before
taking on the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.
The Raiders are coming off a 6-2 setback to #3/3 Cornell in their
first league game of the season. The team was able to find two
goals in the second period from sophomore Taylor
Volpe and freshman Melissa
Kueber but it was not enough to topple the Big Red.
Colgate now has a 3-3 overall record and a 0-1 league mark.
POINT LEADERS
Junior Brittany Phillips, who is fifth in the
nation in power play goals with three, leads the team with 11
points from five goals and six assists. She is followed
by Melissa Kueberwho has six goals and three
assists for nine points and is ranked 13th nationally in goals per
game. Behind them are sophomore Jocelyn
Simpson and freshman Miriam
Drubel who have seven and six points respectively.
Simpson has one goal and six assists while Drubel has one goal and
five assists.
ROOKIES' CONTRIBUTION
The freshman class, which includes two goaltenders, has already
made its mark in the team's offense this season with a total of 20
points. The rookies have scored seven of the team's 20 goals and 13
of Colgate's 37 assists. Leading the way are Kueber and Drubel,
collecting 15 points between the two of them.
SASS CONTINUES TO EXCEL IN NET
Senior Kimberly Sass had a career-high
performance against #3/3 Cornell on Tuesday, recording 58 saves to
become the fourth goalie in program history to have 50 or more
saves in a game. Her 58 stops were the fifth most in school
history, moving her total number of saves this season to 194. She
also continues to sit at fourth in program history in career saves
with 1,820.
SERIES
The all-time series is tied between Colgate and Brown at 9-9-2
since the teams first met in the 2001-02 season. The Raiders have
won four of the last five meetings, tying with Brown 2-2 in
overtime in their first matchup last season. Colgate holds a 6-4
advantage at Starr Rink against the Bears, winning the last meeting
at home 4-1 on Feb. 12, 2011.
The Raiders lead the all-time series against Yale, owning a 10-7-3
record since the teams first met in the 2001-02 season. Last season
the teams went 1-1 with the Bulldogs winning the first meeting in
New Haven, Conn. and Colgate winning the second meeting at Starr
Rink. The win improved the Raiders' home record to 7-3.
SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears (1-0) are coming off a 10-0 shutout win over Sacred
Heart last weekend in their opening game of the season. The team,
which was picked to finish 11th in the preseason poll, will play
its first league game against Colgate on Friday.
Brown is led by sophomore Emilie Dolan, senior Katelyn Landry and
junior Laurie Jolin. Dolan has a team-high four points from two
goals and two assists while Landry and Jolin both have three points
each. Landry has three goals while Jolin has two goals and one
assist. In net the team is led by sophomore Katie Jamieson who has
four saves and a shut out win in the season-opener on Saturday.
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs (0-2) are coming off a pair of losses in their
opening weekend. They first lost to Niagara 5-1 on Friday before
falling to Northeastern 7-0 on Saturday. The team will first travel
to #3/3 Cornell for a matchup on Friday in its league-opener before
facing the Raiders on Saturday.
Yale is led by sophomore Jackie Raines, junior Alyssa Zupon and
freshman Stephanie Mock. Raines has one goal this season while
Zupon and Mock have one assist apiece. Defending the net are senior
Genny Ladiges and freshman Jaimie Leonoff. Ladiges has 32 saves for
an .865 save percentage while Leonoff has 35 saves for an .833 save
percentage.
ECAC PRESEASON POLL
The Colgate women's ice hockey team was picked to finish ninth in
the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll that was released on Sept.
15. The Raiders received 41 points for ninth place above Yale,
Brown and Union. Two-time defending regular-season and tournament
champion Cornell was picked to finish first with 121 votes and 11
first-place votes.
