Colgate Announces Team Awards
HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Colgate women's hockey team announced its team awards during its annual banquet.
The team's Rookie of the Year went to Shannon Doyle. A freshman from Baldwin, Ont., Doyle completed her first season with eight points off one goal and seven assists. She played in 32 of the team's 33 games and started in 11 at defense.
The Most Improved Player went to freshman Megan Wickens who was one of three freshmen to play in all 33 games, while the Sportsmanship Award went to junior forward Heidi Peterson who also appeared in all 33 games.
The Brad Houston Offensive MVP was awarded to sophomore Brittany Phillips. She completed the season with a total of 33 points from 15 goals and 18 assists, leading the team in both categories. Junior Amanda Kirwan was named the Defensive MVP. She played a key role in the team's defense while also adding 18 points from three goals and 15 assists in the season.
The final two awards went to junior goaltender Kimberly Sass and senior forward Jessi Waters. Sass was awarded with the Marian Lefevre Coaches Award for her impressive performance in the 2010-11 season. Starting in 23 of the team's 33 games and playing in 24, she finished the season with five shut outs, three of which were in a row at home, both of which are new school records. She is ranked seventh with most saves in a season, fourth in career saves with 1626 and fifth in career wins with 24.
Waters received the Don Palmateer Award, which is given to the athlete that shows career leadership, inspiration and dedication. A co-captain this season, she played in all 33 games and finished third on the team with 21 points from three goals and a team-high 18 assists.
