Colgate Recognized by Autism Light
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Head
Coach Scott Wiley and the Colgate women's
hockey team were selected as today's Autism Light,
which is awarded to heroes in and for the Autism Community.
The Raiders were honored on the Autism
Light blog for their Autism Awareness Project that was
launched last season.
Autism Light blog posts are written by Alan Stokes,
a father of a young boy with autism named Jonathan. It is an upbeat
but real blog that takes readers on a journey that recognizes
diverse heroes in and for the autism community. The posts will show
gratitude to those people, organizations, corporations, or
resources that are helping make a difference for autism with
preference to real people (if known).
Below is some of the blog entry written by Stokes.
Colgate University is located in Hamilton, New York. It is an
independent university founded in 1819. The Women's Hockey Team at
Colgate University led by Coach Scott Wiley is
an exceptional example of how a university athletic team can spread
autism awareness. The Colgate Women's Hockey Team are Autism Lights
because of their autism awareness campaign that they launched last
Winter.
The enthusiastic and most valuable manager of the team is Kati
Williams, a teenager who has Asperger's Syndrome. Kati Williams was
the inspiration for the team's decision to take up the cause of
autism awareness. On January 28, 2011 they began their campaign for
autism awareness with a special game for autism awareness included
special uniforms with autism puzzle pieces on them and a blue light
at their net that lights up for autism whenever a goal is
scored.
