Team Notes: Colgate Concludes Homestand
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate
women’s ice hockey team will end its six-game homestand this
weekend when it hosts Wayne State in a two-game set. The teams will
first play on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and then again on Saturday,
Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., at Starr Rink.
The Raiders (2-2) are coming off a weekend split with Connecticut
and No. 10 Providence. Colgate opened the weekend with a 5-3 win
over the Huskies, before a 2-1 overtime loss to the Friars on
Saturday. Freshman Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood,
Ill.), sophomore Jessica Hootz (Edmonton,
Alta.), junior Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton,
Alta.) and seniors Hannah Milan (Great
Barrington, Mass.) and Jacquie Colborne
(Calgary, Alta.) had one goal each for the Raiders in
the Connecticut game while Brittany Phillips (Lauder,
Man.) scored the lone goal for Colgate against
Providence.
THE SERIES
Wayne State holds the slight edge over Colgate in the all-time
series with an 11-10 lead. The teams first met in 1999 at the
Division III level when the Raiders defeated the Warriors 2-1 at
home. Since then, the teams have played a two-game series every
season, splitting the first nine, until Wayne State swept the
Raiders last season. The Warriors won the first game 4-3, then
followed with a 1-0 overtime victory in Hamilton.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
After scoring a goal and dishing out two assists in the
Connecticut game, Simpson now leads the team with four points (1G,
3A). She is followed by Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest,
Ill.), Colborne, Hootz and Phillips who each have three
points.
Seven other Colgate players have one point this season. Milan,
Klynstra and freshman Rachel Walsh (Calgary,
Alta.) each have one goal while Shannon
Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.), Jessi Waters (Menlo
Park, Calif.), Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga,
Ont.) and Taylor Volpe (Tustin,
Calif.) have one assist each.
GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Junior goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst,
N.Y.) was named the MLX Skates Goaltender of the Week
by the ECAC Hockey earlier this week after earning her second win
of the season against Connecticut.
The 2008-09 ECAC Goaltender of the Year earned a 5-3 win over
Connecticut on Friday, recording 27 saves in the game. Her first
win of the season was a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 8 New
Hampshire on Oct. 9 in which she earned her second career shutout
with 31 saves. She now has a total of 58 saves in two games and has
a .951 save percentage.
SCOUTING WAYNE STATE
The Warriors (2-4) are on a three-game losing streak with a 1-0
loss to No. 4 Minnesota and two losses to No. 6 Boston College last
weekend in a two-game series. The team, which was predicted to
finish fifth in the CHA preseason poll, also split a series with
Bemidji State for a loss and its first win in its opening games of
the season and then secured its second win against St. Cloud State
the following week.
Wayne State is led by sophomore forward Julie Ingratta who has six
points off five goals and one assist this season. She is followed
by junior forwards Alyssa Baldin and Lauren Ragen who have three
points off two goals and one assist each, and by freshman
forward/defender Cari Coen who has three assists.
