Colgate Adds Seven as Class of 2014
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate women’s hockey
head coach Scott Wiley is pleased to announce the signing of seven
student-athletes who will join the team as the incoming Class of
2014. The class is made up of five forwards and two defensemen, and
come from three different States and two Provinces.
Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, ON), Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood,
IL) and Rachel Walsh (Calgary, AB) signed in the Fall 2009 signing
period, and they were joined in the spring by Stephanie
Giannopoulos (London, ON), Caroline Potolicchio (Bethesda, MD),
Taylor Volpe (Tustin, CA) and Megan Wickens (Toronto, ON).
“It is a very solid class from top to bottom, consisting of
players who want to compete hard, both on the ice and in the
classroom. They will be a great addition to our Colgate
family,” said Coach Wiley.

Stephanie Giannopoulos - London, ON (Bluewater

Shannon Doyle:
Doyle played defense for two years with the Toronto Jr. Aeros. She
tallied 97 points off of 18 goals and 79 assists and was named
captain during her second year. The squad was named the 2010 PWHL
Champions and also claimed the Provincial Gold Medal. Doyle was
also a member of the Canadian under-18 National Team that won the
2010 World Women’s u-18 Championship Gold Medal. She earned
the 2009 Top Defenseman Award for the Canadian u-18 Women’s
Nationals and the 2010 Player of the Game in the u-18 World
Championships vs. Germany. Shannon attended Bishop Strachan School
where she lettered in hockey for four years. While there, she also
lettered in soccer.
Jocelyn Simpson:
Simpson has played four years as a forward with the Chicago
Mission Hockey Club. While with the Mission, the team won four
state championships as well as the USA Hockey National Championship
in 2008. She has tallied a total of 131 goals and 139 assists in
four years with the Mission including 27 goals and 31 assists this
past year. Simpson has attended the National Championship four
times in the last five years and also won the Championship in 2007
with Team Illinois U-14. She was also invited to the USA Hockey
National Development Camp all four years while with the Chicago
Mission. Simpson was a member of the cross-country team at Joliet
Catholic Academy and earned the team’s Sportsmanship award
during her senior year. She is a member of the National Art Honor
Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Key Club.
Stephanie Giannopoulos:
Giannopoulos, a forward, helped the Bluewater Jr. Hawks to a top
four finish in the PWHL. She tallied 9 goals and 12 assists for her
team in 33 games this past season. Stephanie also played for
Saunders Secondary School under head coach Rob Waugh. She was named
assistant captain her senior year. Giannopoulos also played soccer
and basketball at Saunders.
Caroline Potolicchio:
Potolicchio played as a center for four years at Choate Rosemary
Hall. She was an assistant captain of the squad during her senior
year, appearing in 22 games and accruing seven goals and six
assists. The team was Founders League Champions twice while
Potolicchio played there, including her senior year. In 2007 they
won the New England Championship and finished third this past
season. Potolicchio was honored with Choate’s Award for
Greatest Contribution to Athletics for three years in a row. She
also played for the Connecticut Polar Bears u-19 team and was a
member of the field hockey and lacrosse teams at Choate. She was a
co-captain for field hockey and lacrosse and was named to the field
hockey all-star team as a senior.
Taylor Volpe:
Volpe played for the two years as a forward for Gilmour Academy
recording 144 goals and 99 assists including 39 goals and 23
assists during her senior season. She was the leading scorer at
Gilmour during her senior season and the second leading scorer as a
junior. Volpe was named to the 2010 Cushing Academy All-Tournament
Team and 2010 Northwood Invitational All-Tournament Team. Taylor
also played for the Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA and the Anaheim Jr.
Ducks Bantam A boys team prior to attending Gilmour Academy, and
was the Lady Ducks All-Time Leading Scorer. She was a 2006, 2008
& 2009 USA Hockey National Development Camp attendee.
Rachel Walsh:
Walsh played forward for the Edge School, leading the squad as
captain during her senior year. She amassed a total of 84 points
off of 43 goals and 41 assists including 17 goals and 13 assists
during her senior season. Walsh was also captain of the 2009 Team
Alberta. She also lettered in basketball, volleyball and track and
field while at the Edge School. Her 2009 women’s basketball
squad won the ISAA Calgary league championship.
Megan Wickens:
Wickens played defense for the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins, serving as
an assistant captain for two seasons. During her senior year, she
tallied 12 points off one goal and 11 assists while picking up 44
penalty minutes in 32 games. Her squad won the CISAA Tier II
Championship twice while she was a member, once in 2007 and again
in 2010. She also lettered in both basketball and softball.
