Team Notes: Colgate Resumes League Play
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate
women’s ice hockey team will resume league play when it hosts
ECAC Hockey opponents Quinnipiac and Princeton this weekend. The
Raiders will first play the Bobcats on Friday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m.
before facing the Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m., both at
Starr Rink.
The team will be hosting its annual food drive for the Hamilton
Food Cupboard on Friday’s game against Quinnipiac. Fans who
bring two non-perishable food items to the game will receive one
free general admission ticket.
Colgate (4-8, 1-3 ECAC) is coming off a 1-1 weekend, splitting a
two-game set with Niagara. The Raiders lost the first game 2-1 on
Friday and then came back to win the second game 4-1.
Sophomore Brittany Phillips (Lauder,
Man.) scored a goal in both games while
senior Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.), and
freshmen Rachel Walsh (Calgary,
Alta.) and Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood,
Ill.), scored a goal each for the Raiders in the second
game.
SOPHOMORE TRIO
The top-three point leaders for Colgate are all sophomores.
Phillips leads the team with nine points off four goals and five
assists while classmates Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton,
Alta.) and Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest,
Ill.) have seven points apiece. Klynstra has a
team-high five goals and two assists and Brickner, who leads the
team in assists, has one goal and six assists.
ECAC PRESEASON POLL
The Raiders were picked to finish ninth in the ECAC preseason poll
that was released on Sept. 16. The defending regular-season and
tournament champion Cornell, was picked to finish first with a
total of 121 points and 11 first-place votes. Following the Big Red
were Clarkson (105, one first-place vote), Harvard (103),
Quinnipiac (79), St. Lawrence (77), and Princeton (73), with
Rensselaer (70) and Dartmouth (52) rounding off the top eight
spots. Colgate (43) along with Yale (34), Brown (24) and Union (11)
were the four teams picked to miss out on this season’s
tournament.
THE SERIES
Colgate leads the all-time series with Quinnipiac 14-2-3. The
Raiders’ only two losses were a 3-2 setback in 2008 and a 2-1
loss last season. Colgate has gone 0-2 in the last two meetings
with the Bobcats at home and now has a 5-2-1 record against
Quinnipiac at Starr Rink.
Princeton leads the all-time series with the Raiders, owning a
16-5-2 record. Colgate’s only four wins were twice in the
2006, once in 2008 and most recently last season when the Raiders
defeated Princeton 4-3 at Starr Rink.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats (8-5-1, 3-4 ECAC) are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss
to Dartmouth on Saturday and a 4-1 win over No. 10 Harvard on
Friday. The team, which received votes in this week’s
national poll, will play Colgate for the second time this season,
having lost the first game to the Raiders 2-1 in overtime on Oct.
30 in Hamden, Conn.
Quinnipiac is led by freshmen Kelly Babstock and Erica Uden
Johansson as well as junior Kate Wheeler. Babstock, who was named
the ECAC Rookie of the Week after recording back-to-back hat tricks
last weekend, leads the team with 27 points off 13 goals and 14
assists. Following her are Johansson and Wheeler who have 12 points
apiece off six goals and six assists each.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
The Tigers (3-3-1, 3-5-1 ECAC) are coming off a 2-2 overtime tie
with No. 10 Harvard on Saturday and a 3-2 loss to Dartmouth on
Friday. This will also be the second meeting between the two teams
this season with Princeton winning the first game with Colgate 2-0
on Oct. 29 in Princeton, N.J.
The team is led by freshman Sally Butler and sophomore Corey
Stearns. Both Butler and Stearns have five points each off of three
goals and two assists apiece.
